Has anyone else suddenly found out they had a heart problem that went undiagnosed for a long time? When I was 7 years old, I became very ill and no one could figure out why. I was in the ICU and deathly ill for a while. Whatever was wrong with me – it attacked my heart, lungs, and liver. When I left the hospital they said I was fine but that wasn't the case. At follow up appointments my heartbeat was always fast. After tests, the doctors chalked it up to anxiety. There were lasting problems though... I no longer could run or play sports at school because I lost my breath so easily. I never complained about it, there were more serious things going on in my life then. It wasn't until I was 17 that I was diagnosed with asthma. I thought maybe now the problems would stop – but they didn't. I went all the way into my 30's having a hard time walking distances and forget about running. I kept thinking I was just out of shape and if I pushed myself, it would get better. But it never did. Finally last year, I was at my doctor for something minor and she noted my fast heart rate. She commented if that kept up, she was going to put me on medicine. After a few weeks, I went back to her office and asked to please be put on medicine! I told her the history of my weakness and easy exhaustion and she diagnosed me with tachycardia – an abnormally fast heartbeat. Now I take medication every day to slow my heart down and I feel a million times better!
