Starbucks Being Sued

I heard on the radio this morning that a twenty-four-year-old woman was suing Starbucks. When I hear of a big company being sued the first thing I think is a dispute over pay or an accident in one of their facilities.
This woman is not suing for anything like that. She is suing because she claims Starbucks puts too much ice in their ice coffee. She claims they put so much ice in that they are cheating customers by not giving them the ice coffee they paid for.
Starbucks response? They need to put ice in their ice coffee otherwise it’s not ice coffee.
Makes sense to me. I’ve never bought ice coffee from Starbucks. I’ve bought Starbuck’s ice tea before though. Didn’t have any problem with too much ice in the tea.
Have you ever wanted to sue Starbucks for putting too much ice in your drink?

There is an occasion when a store will fill your cup up with tons of ice so that they don't have to fill it with so much soda, but Ice Coffee... that is going to be hard to prove. How much ice is too much??

Yes, that is a good question. Everywhere around this area where I live most places will let you have refills free of charge so the amount of ice in the drink doesn't really matter unless you are ordering to-go. Many places will just hand you a paper cup and let you fill it yourself. If you put too much ice in, that's your problem.

I agree with you about the soda, I always say no ice.

@kevin1877uk My brother always skips the ice, too. I like at least a little ice in my cold drink.

Ice coffee has never cranked my crank. I'll drink ice tea over ice coffee any day.

@RichardMeister yes ice tea along with ice in lemon aid has been a standard for years. Marketing inventions perhaps. I wonder if this girl has a lawyer or just wanted her name in the papers.

I heard this also. I read through the comments here first and found that many don't think you can have to much ice, well..... So I don't agree with the suing part of this article since you could remedy this situation without suing, especially for some ridiculous amount of money, 5 million. I don't drink coffee but maybe once a week and I get an iced coffee, that's all I ever order, at times the amount of ice that they put in the cup makes it difficult to get the straw all the way into the cup. Now all of these drinks to have taste the way they are intended calls for certain amount of ingredients and when you change the ingredients then you change the drink. A person could easily ask for a little less ice, and problem solved. I generally just lift the lid and knock out a few pieces of ice into the trash and situation resolved. I don't know what the woman's reasoning is for to much ice, maybe it's the same thing can't get the straw in, but I have listed 2 things that could be done instead of another frivolous law suit. I have no idea what is wrong with people wanting to sue people. OH wait, yes I do, people want something for nothing, in this case a lot of something for nothing.

I agree. I heard two different reason for her asking for $5 million. One was for all the people who were ripped off (although I don't know how that's going to help anyone other than her). The other reason was to force Starbucks into using bigger cups for their ice drinks. But I think your last sentence is the real reason behind the lawsuit.

I used to work in a complex, just up the escalator from a Starbucks.
The smell of coffee made me a bit nauseated, it was so strong.
And I like coffee!!
I'm a tea lover too, but usually at home, because few places actually boil their water and nothing is less satisfying than 'hot water' tea!! yech!

@sulynsi A few years ago I tried Lipton Cold Brew which wasn't too bad. But I'd rather have sun tea.

I don't drink coffee. I drink tea for the most part. At the Barnes & Nobles bookstore they sell Starbuck products but I usually have the hot or ice tea.

I read about that - is that silly or what?! Of course they need to put in a lot of ice to make iced coffee - that's part of the recipe! A lot of ice is needed otherwise it all melts too soon and you get watery coffee. That's hardly an issue to sue a company over . . . that's just ridiculous! I don't drink iced coffees from anywhere - usually they are too sweet for me. Maybe I should sue them all for putting too much sweetner in it!

@RichardMeister That lady must have too much time on her hands. Bigger cups are just going to get a person a larger portion of the same iced coffee - that's all. All she had to do was tell the barista to go easy on the ice - is that so hard? Does she really have to take this issue to court? I can't believe a lawyer would actually represent her.

It is silly. She claims she wants to force Starbucks into using bigger cups. I may have had an ice coffee many years ago, but since I don't generally drink coffee I can't say for sure. Yeah, go ahead and sue. Why not? I understand you won't have to pay anything unless you win. That's why you see so many silly lawsuits.

The news said she was suing for something like $5 million. She said she wants to force Starbucks to use bigger glasses for the ice drinks.

@jahunt I heard on the news that Starbuck customers can ask for low ice which will make it less of a problem.

@RichardMeister I can see her point, yes the company should do this, but no, it is not worthy of a lawsuit. It is frivolous to say the least...

No Starbucks but maybe Macdonalds for too much ice in soda.

That is what they said on the news. But then it wouldn't be ice coffee. If they make the ice coffee like they do ice tea, they brew it so it is hot then they add ice.

That's too bad. America has become a sue-happy lot.

@RichardMeister That was a common criticism of Americans by Australians - that Americans would sue for the least little thing. But we are just as bad now.

That is the most stupidest reason to sue someone. It is like those people who burn themselves on things that are hot. Like come on really.... of course your coffee is hot. Coffee normally is hot if you don't order an ice coffee. Some people are just so greedy that they will sue for anything.

I agree. This woman claimed she was doing it to keep other customers from being ripped off. That's probably just to make her sound less greedy. I'm certain there was no plans to share the money with other Starbucks customers.
