Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar were two tycoons of bollywood industry of the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. Very interestingly they acted in very few films, Raj Kapoor in only 67 films and Dilip Kumar in 62 films. Raj Kapoor concentrated a lot in production, direction, editing of his films, so could not find time. Dilip Kumar was the highest paid actor of the country, so picked and chose only good roles and acted in 1 film in 2 years.
One of the reasons of their success story was due to their romantic partners. Nargis acted opposite Raj Kapoor in 13 films and out of them Awara, Shree 420 and Barsaat became cult films. Internationally these films did great business.
Vaijayantimala acted opposite Dilip Kumar in 8 films and out of them few of them were the best films of Dilip Kumar like Naya Daur, Madhumati, Paigham, Ganga Jumna, Leader.
The actors of the following age used to have the ambition of getting success of the esteem of Dilip Kumar Vaijayantimala or Raj Kapoor Nargis. It is difficult to say which was the best but both were classic pairs.

I do know who Raj Kapoor is but not the other actor. I am American and Aishwarya Rai-Bachan is a Goddess!

Thanks John for the comments. Raj Kapoor used to be called the Indian Charlie Chaplin. Thanks for knowing him. Some of his films like Awara, Sangam went abroad.

Thanks Jaishankarji for the response. There are many duets songs of Raj Nargis like "pyar hua ikraar hua hai", "dum bhar jo udhar my phere" which became super hit in 1950s.

@else34 Thanks Jaishankarji, very interestingly Shankar Jaikishan used all the great singers of India in Raj Kapoor film Shree 420. Mukeshji sang "mera joota hai japani", Manna Dey sang "mur mur ke na dekh", Rafisahab, Lataji and Mukeshji sang "ramaiya vasta maiya". All the songs became super hit.

Thanks Avinashji for the excellent comments. You have point in your observation. I get amazed to see the high voltage acting of Dilip Vaijayantimala and Raj Nargis pair. They made romance look real.

Even the music in the films of Raj Nargis Dilip Vaijayantimala were outstanding Avinashji. While Raj Kapoor Nargis films had the great Shankar Jaikishan, Lata Mukesh combination in films like Barsaat, Awaara, Shree 420, Dilip Vaijayantimala had the great Naushad Ali, Rafi, Lata combination in films like Ganga Jumna, Leader.

Dear Avinashj, interestingly Dilip Kumar also acted opposite Nargis in films like Andaz, Babul, Deedar, but Nargis pair with Raj Kapoor was accepted more by the viewers. Similarly Raj Kapoor acted opposite Vaijayantimala in films like Nazrana, Sangam, but viewers accepted Vaijayantimala opposite Dilip Kumar more than anyone else.
