Now-a-days children are affected with most of the diseases in young age. Earlier times it was not heard children are affected with some kind of diseases. Diabetic and heart attack become very common among children. Same way thyroid problem become very common among children. My teen age son consulted to doctor on shoulder pain. The doctor suggested many blood tests including the thyroid test. The thyroid test result become positive on first test. We have tested the same with another reputed lab and result become negative. I am really confused with the two different types of reports.

Hello didi Sad that this happened to the reports from two different places. The better way as it seems, would be to go for a third one and make a selection depending on the majority. My younger bro was having this Thyroid Problem long back. Sometimes, I feel that I too have it but none of the medics have asked me to test. It can be a heredity thing too. In my family, dad and mom too had it and that is why I think I too would have it and it is hereditary.

Dear Sidhu, Yes, my elder sister's daughter has this problem and my mother suffered too. However, my test turned negative once I did as I become too thin. Now the place, first test done is not reliable, one of the friend who works in the same field asked to go for this reputed lab and it become negative too. So the second test we can trust, it seems. Anyway his x-ray shows some dislocation on bone in shoulder. Now he is taking medicines.

That's weird! Good that you went for the second test. Hope your son will be fine. I don't know nowadays diabetic and heart attack become common among children. Is it because the food they take?

Yes, dear, the food they eat has an important role in fact. I don't know why parents are silently supporting these kinds of demands by children. Parents should be changed their attitude and give important to health than fulfilling their childish demands.

You don't say what test you're referring to. The Thyroid function test is very commonly done and you could have two labs with different definitions of 'normal'. If you son's results were on the edge of normal, one might have reported as normal and the other as under or over active. Either way, you need to be REALLY sure before you start medicating him.

I can't give a scientific reply as the report is with me at present. The thyroid test done in the first lab shows 6.5 and the second lab it shows 3.5.

@Sreekala Assuming that's the TSH level - and that it's done with the same units in India as it is in the UK - the first test shows your son has a slightly underactive thyroid and the second shows he's more or less 'normal'. Different labs have slightly different test methods. Pick one and stick with it - don't move around between labs or the results can't be directly compared.

@Sreekala so, he has to take a pill for thyroid. there is a pill called PTU but it will depend on the doctor if he should prescribe this medicine to people having thyroid problems. also propanolol for fast heart beat is also ordered by the doctor, if the person has hyperthyroidism

Yes, it is common and can be hereditary too. The good thing is now doctors are advising for doing all kinds of blood tests for simple things. It may be bit weird but it has its own advantages too.

I think you need to have second opinions. Sometimes lab test cannot be a curate if being tested.
