How Long Can You Stand It?

How long can you stand it ... if you're required to stand for many hours? A relative of mine was required to undergo on-the-job training this summer. Luckily, she was immediately accepted at a specialty casual dining restaurant. I found out that they have to stand most of the time during their shift with only one 1-hour break. She times-in at 10am and allowed to leave by 9pm, but sometimes it can extend to 10pm. Have you ever had or known anyone who had a job that required standing a lot? How did you cope until you've adjusted to that routine?

When I was working as a chef a few years ago, I need to stand and walk around (sometimes, even run) for the whole 8 hours. At first, it was tiring but after a few days I got used to it. It's a good exercise...

were you at the dining area taking order and serving food or in the kitchen? the website i read said even those who work in the kitchen stand for long hours, too.

@AkoPinay i think i'd rather be helping in the kitchen, than deal with confusing/changing orders, and complaints and criticisms from customers.

@MGjhaud i think it's unfair. if you're going to chain people to their workstations, at least make them comfortable, be considerate of their health. i don't know if yours is call center work, but i heard that agents aren't even allowed to get up to pee. scary.

can you put something like a cushion for your back, or sit on a doughnut, or have a foot rest wherein on or both knees are higher than your hips?

I worked in a call centre where staff usually it down but managers started taking chairs away from anyone under target - I refused to co-operate and they backed down but eventually fired me

I think those sort of jobs are more for young people - I certainly couldn't stand for that amount of time.

yeah, some of the responses reflect that. does riding horses affect the back or hips?

@jaboUK then it's genetic. osteoarthritis runs on my mother's side. so you're the only one who rode horses. i remember you're "the sporty one."

@hereandthere I'm not sure if it's due to riding but my hips are dodgy. But then again, so are both my sisters' and they've never ridden.

I haven't that work experience because I landed a job that requires number works, so I have to sit down all the time computing numbers the whole day.

Haven't had that kind of experience at all. But I could stand for many hours as long as i'm allowed to move around. But standing without moving at all makes me nauseous for some reason.

@hereandthere I've never experienced being in a long queue that doesn't move. The only time i was standing without really moving was during the PMT days in high school.

i've never had such a job, either. i guess if long slow lines are unavoidable, you'd have to leave from time to time when you start feeling nauseous.

Cashiers in grocery stores are required to stand all day! But it is much better than kneeling all day!

@hereandthere LOL . . Yeah, for 8 consecutive years from first high school to fourth year college . . I knelt down every morning (holy mass) and every afternoon (benediction) . . then knelt down and prayed before going to bed . . and the worst thing in the seminary was when we did something bad or not behaving properly . . the usual punishment imposed by those friars, ehek, I mean priests, was kneeling down for half an hour! Nakakakalyo! And 25 years after, there is a side effect of those prolonged kneeling down in the seminary that I noticed. . . Nawawala na nga ang kalyo . pero utot naman ako ng utot ngayon. . buhay ang patay . . I mean patay ang buhay na ito!

That is a very long time to be standing. It is a little easier if you are moving around during that time but it is still a long time.

When I worked in a pharmacy, we were on our feet for at least four hours before we had a lunch break. Technically, we were supposed to have two fifteen minute breaks—one before and one after lunch—but we seldom got them. And we often worked more than eight hours. The pharmacists worked nine-ten hours. It often meant standing in one spot for long periods of time.

I can stand longer than 8 hours! :) I've worked as a volunteer nurse in a huge hospital in our hometown and I was assigned in the operating room. I was one of the nurse who assists the doctors during surgeries - and they're not just the simple ones. I mean the really long ones. Sometimes, I can no longer feel my legs but I learned to shake them every 2 hours and switch weights from one leg to the other. I can still do it now but I wouldn't (lol) unless someone will pay me to do it,. I guess I would hehe

yes, those in the medical field are among the jobs listed in the websites i've visited. so you've been in surgeries that lasted more than 8 hours. does that mean no eating, no bathroom breaks for everyone?

@slayer08 what more if you're the surgeon. you have to maintain your concentration, yet aware of everything that's going on, and being in charge all those hours.

@hereandthere yep. none of that. but if you have to go then you have to remove yourself from the room and if you need to go back in then you have to change your suits all over that includes washing your hands and forearms as well.

That's a lot, but for people working in a restaurant is normal too. Either one gets accustomed or one finds another job. But one can get accustomed pretty fast. It also depends on the atmosphere, mood of the colleges and type of clients.

I guess some jobs require the staff to just stand, but not sit down at all, I have no idea about this, as I have only been working as a programmer, and sit in front of the computer all day long. I don't think I can stand for such long hours. I'd prefer to walk, instead of just stand. I could carry my little girl with baby sling for hours, but I need to walk around, otherwise I'd find it more tiring if I just stand and not move.

i bet it's harder for pregnant women. i think the key is to keep moving, or switch the weight from one foot to the other.

Long back when I started my career, I joined as a trainee teacher. Being the youngest, they did not allow me to attend a 5-day training course. But the other teachers had gone. So there was this 5-day period wherein I would get into the classroom at 7:00 am and come out at 9:00pm. I was also to take care of the computer lab and the students in there. Probably that was the only time in my life when I had been standing all my day for work. That time - I was young, had a zest of yes, I have to prove the seniors that I can go beyond and accomplish their faith in me. Today, at 42 (almost twice the age I was in back then), with ailments, there is not much that would interest me to stand for that long (14 hours period). In all probabilities, if I was asked, I would deny on health issues. But yes, I still can go on for 8 hours with at least a lunch break and two small coffee breaks.... I did that successfully for 3 days during one of my workshops for corporate office in 2013

yes, teachers and trainers are also among the professions listed in the websites i've read. i think that's the ideal setup - 2 coffee breaks and 1 lunch break.

It is one thing that I admire (sort of pity) salesladies in department stores who need to stand for hours and they will be fined or reprimanded when caught sitting. When they got home, they should rest their legs much and put it in an elevated position.

same with security guards, factory or assembly line workers. i see the sales ladies wearing flats when going to work and going home. yeah, lying in bed with your legs against the wall feels great!
