Grand Opening Today - no swimming yet!

Today is the day Ruby has waited for since last October....the uncovering of the pool...
Our neighbor helped get the cover off and now my husband has hours of work ahead of him. This is what we go through every year on opening day. When we lived up north and covered the pool in the winter we didn't open it to find green algae...but it happens in the south.
People say, "leave it open all winter", to which I say: "I won't pay to run a filter and use chemicals all winter and I don't want Ruby swimming when it's 20 degrees out in January."
Within two days the water will be crystal clear and Ruby can do what she does best - swim.
Photo is mine - I don't think anyone else would want to claim it LOL!

I wouldn't leave it uncovered either, it would probably look and be much worse than a bit of green water.

Why leave a pool open for 6-7 months when it is not being used - makes no sense.

@AbbyGreenhill No it sure doesn't. Sounds like more work than it's worth if you are not using it.

I would love to swim in your pool. Just make sure it's ready and clean!

Since I don't to the work - it's worth it to me LOL, my husband is taking a break from the brushing down the sides...that's the hardest part for him.

@AbbyGreenhill My hubby said that about my pom once, that he wouldnt jump off a bridge into the water below (foot fridge) and he totally did. seconds after hubby said it. was funny later.

My husband has been doing this since he was a kid (and he just turned 73) - so he had it down pat - uncovering is a piece of cake, it's brushing down the pool to get rid of the algae that is a killer.

@CRK109 Our neighbor helped him get the cover off, that's the heavy part of the job - that pool is 40 x 20 and the cover is extremely difficult to maneuver around.

@AbbyGreenhill oh I'm sure it must be back breaking. too bad he doesn't have some help. Even though he has been doing it for so many years, we all reach a point where some help doesn't hurt. :)

Amazing how that green murky water will soon be as clear as a bell. (Is a bell clear?)

This is an exciting time of year with the summer coming. I know Ruby will have a blast swimming in it.

She went out earlier and stood there looking at it, but never ventured in.

@AbbyGreenhill It takes a couple of day to clean the water. I imagine that it's hard to prevent Ruby to jump in the pool.

@LadyDuck She won't just go in - she knows that until the hand rail goes in and we take off her collar she won't even attempt it.

There is a set of steps - first time she went in she knew exactly how to get out.

What a beautiful size pool you have and I'm sure you enjoy many hours of fun swimming. Pools do take a lot of work but worth it if you are a water person (like me)

It is 40 by 20 - it's a big one, bigger than the one we had at our last house. that's our entertainment for the summer!

I would love a pool but not the responsibility of taking care of it. My parents had one and we used it a lot but Dad was always the keeper upper.

My husband had a pool growing up so he's been doing pool duty for many many years. It is actually very little upkeep - check chlorine level daily - vac. once or twice a week...He could do it in his sleep.

Water won't be warm enough for humans to swim for a while, but ruby doesn't care how cold it is.

Even though we have fairly cheap electric where I live, running a filter for no reason makes no sense financially.

Nice area. I would like to have some place to swim this summer. Might be good for me. I have been thinking of visiting the YMCA but it is always so busy.

We use ours daily - and so does the dog, so a pool is a necessity - if you ever come this way drop in!

@AbbyGreenhill wonderful, wonderful, wonderful. Family came and joined us, the weather was great. We are going home a week early though. It is so warm that the snow is not so good any more. I could stay and hike and cycle but my husband can't think of a reason to stay in the mountains if he is not skiing.
