I bought my daughter a raspberry plant

Last year for my daughters birthday I bought her two little starter (they were basically a foot long stick in dirt) raspberry plants. They were $5 each.
One died soon after planting it in the ground as it was half dead when I unwrapped it. The other broke off and something trampled it. We were really upset about it. We assumed it was the neighbors dog or kid walking across our land and not noticing the stick sticking up haha.
I was at Kmart a few days ago and we saw this raspberry plant. It was about $15 but they were having a sale so it came to a little over $11. It looks healthy and full. I accidentally broke a limb off just carrying it to the car. They are really easy to break unfortunately.
As you can see in the photo though even with the one limb broke off it looks like it will grow and be very healthy.
It has rained here for over a week straight. I am hoping that pretty soon it will warm up and stay warm and then I can plant it outside. When I do I will put chicken wire around it so nothing will be able to damage it this time.

She also picked out a little cactus plant that day. Today while we were out shopping her brother picked one out too. My mother brought me home a palm tree plant from Florida about a month back. I have the hibiscus plant here until mothers day tomorrow when I give it to my mother. So we have a lot of new plants sitting around our house. It looks pretty.

My husband's grandparents grew raspberries when he was younger. They need to be cut back occasionally to encourage the plant to branch out.

@shaggin They can be frozen too and enjoyed throughout the year. Hoping that one day we will have some land that I can plant berry bushes and fruit trees.

Yes I know they can really get large and take over huge areas. I hope this one will spread a bit as I would love to have a large batch of them. My daughter would love it. They are so expensive to buy in stores that I only buy them as a treat.

They grow all over the place here and get way over grown so I think as long as I can keep a fence around it of chicken wire to keep it from being trampled it will grow well as it is already looking great in the pot.

@shaggin We used to have raspberries growing everywhere when we lived in the country in NY state. We picked them and ate them right off the bush. Even the dog ate them off the bush. They were fresh! Everyone tried to be the first one to see a ripe raspberry each summer.

Yes it should thrive much better then the little stick plants that I bought and they broke off. I know just where I will put this one in the yard.

My daughter has raspbery plants in her garden and as as they are just a few, SofĂa is the owner of the fruit. Fortunatly she is generous and I can have one or two fruits when I go there.
Place some stick around it to begin with, so the plant does not break while it gets stronger.

Hmm that is a good idea I could tie a stick to it to keep the initial branch strong. Thanks for the advice! I am also going to make a little cage around it with chicken wire to keep kids or animals walking by from stepping on it and breaking it off. The other one was literally just a stick sticking up I can see how it got broken easily. It was just disappointing when it happened but I wan't mad at anyone whoever it was...
