His very first patent was for an Electronic Vote Recorder that he invented when he was just 22 years old, and was working as a telegrapher. This voting device kept track of votes and tabulated the final outcome of the election. He also invented the phonograph, said to be his personal favorite. When you think about it, it was truly amazing, because it could record a spoken voice message and then play it back. It was said, that his first recorded message was “Mary had a little lamb” and he and those who heard it were shocked when they heard his voice repeating what he had said. I can only imagine. And think how far technology has come from that humble beginning. Thomas Alva Edison did NOT invent the light bulb although he is credited with improving what several others had already invented. His version was much more practical and economical and he also invented the entire electric UTILITY system to power all the electrical inventions that were yet to be invented. Another invention was the Magnetic Iron Ore Separator, that eventually led to the cement kiln industry from which the building of Yankee Stadium came about later. Edison is credited with 1093 patents, a very long list of items that fueled many different industries, including the motion picture industry. He kept over 4,000 notebooks and many drawings and sketches. Over 5 million documents actually from which much information has been gleaned. Life magazine named him The Man of the Millennium. He even recognized the importance of solar and wind energy as early as the 1920s because he could foresee the problems of fossil fuel scarcity and air pollution. We can only imagine what he would invented with all the tools available today. All this from a person who only had three months of formal schooling. Amazing! Picture by Pixabay
