Picker Beware

As I have mentioned before my hubby is a big fruit guy. We have so much fruit growing it's almost to the point of crazy. But it makes him happy so I let him pretty much grow what the heck he feels like. I like fruit but am not quite as crazy as he is about it. I do like photographing it however maybe more than I like eating it. This shot I took last summer of our raspberry plants. Evil Evil thorns on this one. Tiny little things that are hard to see when they get stuck in your finger. I pick the lower raspberries hubby picks the upper berries as they are way over my head. I can't even remember how many times I have reached in only to get stuck by the thorns.

I didn't realize that raspberry bushes had so many thorns. You're lucky to have so much fruit growing and never have to buy any

OMG, I hear you! We too have raspberry bushes and those thorns hurt like the dickens when you get stabbed by them. We just planted blueberry and blackberry bushes as well so I am hoping they don't have such thorns. I love my strawberries and am hoping our grapes will grow fruit this year.

@fishtiger58 I will keep you posted if mine grow, our soil isn't that great so we have to add good soil and mix it in every year.

@cintol I sure hope they do well for you, and I wish we could figure out why we can't seem to grow them. Illinois has incredibly rich soil so I can't explain why we can't grow them.

@cintol I know blueberries need a different ph of soil acid or alkaline or something like that. We have tried everything to grow them.

Those little stickers would certainly hurt. I wish my hubby felt the same way about fruit. I want tons of fruit trees, berry bushes and vines. We have planted a few but they did not survive the deer or my husband on the lawn mower.

@fishtiger58 Oh the deer in our area have plenty of woods to snack on but they still manage to find their way to our yard. I have always wanted to try the honey berries. I would also like to try the goji berries too.

@fishtiger58 I get pricked when I'm trying to prune my few rose-bushes. I'm always surprised how much it hurts.

Most of the raspberries you can get without getting pricked but every now and then they get you.

Haha I just bought my daughter a raspberry plant at Kmart the other day. When I saw this photo I thought to myself it looks like the prickers on her plant. Then I read the post and see that I am right. This is a beautiful photo. Most likely my daughter will be the one picking the raspberries and eating them so I won't be getting pricked. I just have to deal with getting it planted in the ground when it warms up.

I hope it grows well and they spread like crazy. They can become a huge patch given the chance.

Oh yes, I have raspberry bushes too and those thorns can be brutal. Though to me, rasperries are worth the pain.

@fishtiger58 I had wild black raspberries for years that grew wild but I only have one red raspberry bush left and two blueberries.

They are most definitely worth the pain. We get more than we can eat as my hubby has planted to many of them lol.

We used to have raspberry plants, but we dug them out as we wanted to enlarge our vegetable garden. They are dangerously sharp to the touch!

I wonder if you looked if you could find thin gloves that would protect your fingers but let you feel the berries. Ask at your new garden centre...

I also have raspberries and I know how difficult is to pick up the thorns stuck in your fingers. There is one berry plant that is worse than this, the blackberry, big painful thorns.

Blackberries are the same, I was blessed to buy next to a field of nothing but blackberries, with thorns and snakes.

I also know of a huge black raspberry patch in the wild. I often go and get a couple of buckets full of those. My nephew is going to dig some up this summer to take back to his yard.
