Rev That Baby Up!

Somebody just drove by my house in a old beat-up pickup. When he was next to my house he revved the engine up. The noise rattled my house. I said to myself, “Rev that baby up!”
I know sometimes people rev their motors rather than honk the horn to get your attention, but I didn’t recognize the truck so I have no idea why he revved his engine. Maybe he was just showing off–see, my old beat-up pickup can make a lot of racket.
Now if he would have revved it up, popped the clutch and burned rubber, I may have thought he had something to show off about. But me being impressed? Not really. I’m too old for that jazz to impress me.
Well, anyway, he’s long gone now and I’ll probably never know why the guy found it necessary to disturb the peace. For all I know the guy may not have known himself why he revved that baby up.

That could very well be it. He just went by a few minutes ago and did the same thing.

Oh geez, this is what those noisy tenants did next door - every morning! The older man has a big truck and I don't know if he's doing that to warm up the engine or what - but you can hear that thing rev and it's LOUD. And by the way, in the afternoon someone would go in their driveway and honk like mad . . . I think they wanted someone from inside to come out.

@RichardMeister I don't know if I've heard any diesel engines - but certainly I haven't heard one that long (2-3 hours??). That would be completely annoying. And didn't you smell fumes?

They sound like wonderful neighbors. Years ago I had a neighbors who parked his diesel pickup right next to my bedroom window. Then he would go out at about 4 in the morning and start the thing up. He would let it set there idling for 2 to 3 hours before leaving. I'm sure you have heard what one of those knocking diesel engines sound like when they idle. It certainly didn't have me jumping with joy.

@much2say Haven't you ever when somewhere where there was a semi idling? That's how it sounded. And my window was closed so no problems with fumes–just noise.

I think some guys, especially the young ones, just like the sound. Maybe it makes them feel powerful or something. My daughter had a boyfriend who would work on his car in my driveway and rev it and/or let it run for hours. Or, until I got mad and went out and yelled at him.

Yes, there comes a point when the car is going to run as good as it will ever run and monkeying with it isn't going to make it run any better. The young ones definitely like revving the pistons out of the engine. I take it the boyfriend was nice enough to shut the car off rather than give you a form of sign language.

@boiboing Hooter, tooter, I don't care what you call it, if that's the case, he needs to get it fixed.

That could very well be. Maybe he had the radio playing and was tapping his foot to the beat.

@RichardMeister What's the politically correct way to say the guy or gal's foot went spastic?

@sallypup I have no clue, but maybe it was the guy or gal's head that went spastic.

@cindiowens I sure did. Why don't you get rid of that old beater and get something decent?
