Calling from the IRS...

I wonder if maybe ALL of the calls I've been getting recently are SUPPOSED to be from them?
I got a call today and just checked my voicemail. The voicemail starts out as if it's already been cut off. They are saying the number they are calling from. The voice almost sounds robotic, but it's an Indian (from India) accent.
I am guessing it's a recording, hence why they were cut off like that.
Anyway.. They say their name is "Anderson" from "The Internal Revenue Service."
Riiiiiight, and I'm the Queen of England!
I did a look up on the number, and it appears to be residential, with the name given being NOT the same one that was given on the voicemail.
Obviously I am not calling them back. I know it's not the IRS, but I wonder about how many people DO think it is!

Unfortunately people do fall for this too often! I reported the number on the website I got the info about the number off of. I am hoping it helps someone who might end up getting this call.
I received another phone call today (I keep my cellphone on vibrate when I'm asleep) and didn't recognize the number. I just answered "You would do good not to sell your wares to someone who sleeps during the day" and hung up.

The sad thing is that these people will get a cell phone and keep the number for a couple of days then get rid of it, so it's nearly impossible to track them down. You'd think the cell phone companies wouldn't allow this, given that they should be running out of telephone numbers...
I've received the calls, too. I just report them to the IRS. The first thing they say every January when tax season begins is to remember Rule #1: THE IRS DOES NOT CALL YOU. EVER.
If anyone has any doubt about whether that call was really from the IRS, see rule #1.

I don't know how to go about reporting it to the IRS. How did you do it?

@ScribbledAdNauseum -- there's a form on their web site...I think it's report fraud or something like that.

No, the IRS would send you a letter. These calls have been reported in my area too. It was on the news.

Really really sad that people will fall for this though.
It makes me wonder how it became so widespread.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I didn't think they would do, same over here they always write first then if you phone them and they need to phone you back that's the only time that I know of.

@kevin1877uk Yes, I think I've even received a letter (not from the IRS but from the healthcare people) stating that I needed to call them.
They are really really careful with private information. I called once on behalf of a relative to get tax forms sent and had to act as if I was the spouse of the relative just to get the thing sent!

I don't have a definitive answer, but I am almost certain that all correspondence would come via the mail. They discourage giving out your social security number via the phone at any rate.
Nope, definitely not the Queen.

Good QUestion. Scammers, trying to get precious info. Get our Social Security Number and they can steal our identity, get credit cards, etc.

@toniganzon Yes! To think they have to be very sly to try to cheat people, and yet they can't get a job!

Yes but I know several people who I don't think would realize it was a scam. I'm sitting here trying to figure out how they got the number to begin with.

On the news here there was a scam alert- people saying they are calling from the IRS. Glad you didn't call them back!

I remember seeing a news report about it not too long ago. I knew better anyway. The IRS aren't going to call us on the phone.
I filled out a "scam" report on the website I got the information about the number from. For what it's worth, I hope it helps someone.

Yes they are. 20 years ago this kind of stuff didn't happen so much. Now it's everywhere, and not just on the phone!

After I wrote about taxes on my blog, I got a call from the "IRS" too saying that the IRS has a lawsuit against me. Of course they don't.

THere are a lot of desperate people out there!
Sad that they've been able to get away with doing these calls at all.
