Has anyone made "fluff" before?

We have a weekly carry-in and this woman made what she calls "fluff" The texture is like whipped cream, but it is flavored and has fruit mixed in. When I asked her how she made it, she said she used unsweetened Jello and fruit and mixed it into cool whip.
However, when I look up recipes online, there is usually something like cottage cheese or cream cheese, and the jello is mixed with boiling water (like you are making jello) except you don't allow it to jell before mixing.
I want to make my own because I don't do artificial sweeteners and don't know if she told me wrong, or if this is a recipe, just not found online. So I picked up the brand of gelatin I use along with a non-GMO whipped topping and some peaches, but don't know if I have to mix in cream cheese (which I do have) or add boiling water, or just mix the dry gelatin into the whipped topping.

A carry-in is when a group of people, either a church gathering or event, bring in food and there is usually a variety of food from main dishes, to side dishes, to delicious desserts.

You will certainly have to dissolve the gelatin in water before mixing it with whatever creamy substance you are using. I have only ever made this using a flavoured fruit jelly (our equivalent of Jello comes in blocks of sweetened, flavoured, concentrated squares which one dissolves in boiling water) and real cream whipped to soft peak stage. The cooled but not set gelatin mixture is folded into the whipped cream and then allowed to set in the refrigerator.
I guess that if you are using something like cream cheese or mascarpone, you would mix this with the whipped topping before folding in the gelatin mix. Once set, decorate the top with peaches and some more piped cream or whatever whipped topping you use.

Actually my friend mixed the fruit, she didn't just top it. Thanks, I wonder why she didn't tell me that part, because another friend and I asked her if she just mixed the dry jello in and she said yes.

@Carmelanirel2 That sounds weird! We don't have Jello here, so I'm not sure, but I think that it's a powder (flavoured and sweetened, usually). If you mix powdered gelatin with the topping, it would absorb some of the water and swell but it would still be sort of grainy. The idea of 'fluff' is that the gelatin in the mix holds the air bubbles you whip in and makes the whole thing firmer than just whipped cream so I don't think that mixing the powdered Jello in without dissolving it first would work.

@owlwings Yes, it is powdered and sweetened (unless one gets the chemical unsweetened one, yuck!) As for the gelatin swelling, I don't think so. We mix it with boiling water, so it is a liquid, but after a few hours in the fridge, it jells, but I don't think it swells, just changes from liquid to a solid.

I have made a few different kinds of things to dip fruit in. One has cream cheese, cranberry sauce and cool whip. That is the one I have made the most. The other I cannot think of the ingredients that are in it but it is amazing. I would have to look up the recipe if you were interested. It does not have jello though. It is just white colored.

This had fruit mixed into it and @owlwings helped me decide and so I mixed the gelatin (since I don't use pork gelatin, it started to gel up a lot quicker) but other than that, it turned out great!!!

According to @owlwings it does have to be mixed with water and why this friend told me otherwise, I have no idea...
