Getting Educated

One "side effect" of taking my sister to all of these appointments the last few years is that I am learning new things all the time.
The current focus is now her kidneys. She had x-rays to check on why her back always hurts and they found a cyst on a kidney. Because there was no change over a six month time frame she was referred to a urologist.
The good news is, based on further tests, the cyst is benign. The bad news is, she has a large kidney stone in her other kidney.
The education I am claiming, from sitting in on these appointments, is the role calcium plays in preventing kidney stones and the role salt plays in causing them.
We are all told that salt raises your blood pressure and increases your chance of stroke. Her sodium in her blood stream always reads low.
That is because the TONS of salt she has always eaten is excreted through her kidneys and is causing her to have this big huge stone.
Lessons learned: Eat calcium rich foods when enjoying foods high in oxylates. Drink lots of fluids. Cut back on salt. An excellent substitute is any citrus flavored fruit or juice as it helps dissolve the substances that could cause stones.
I have always tried to learn my lessons from my sister's example. It still works for me.

Vitamin D is essential for so many things and is needed to use the calcium. If you can get enough sunshine your body will make it, but my doctor has me taking a supplement.

@Marilynda1225 The original guidelines for Vitamin D in the diet were miscalculated. We also drink less milk, and get less sunshine. Air pollution makes it harder for our body to make Vitamin D from sunshine. So does using sunscreen. So many people need Vitamin D supplements.

About the size of a dime. Too big to pass until they break it up with this sound wave machine.

I like salt, but I don't over do it.
At a routine physical they seen my kidney stone in my x-ray. They had no idea how long it would take before it would decide to move. Boy, when it did, that was painful! They say the pain is right up there with child birth and I believe it.
Mom had me take herbs that were to dissolve it, which evidently worked. They x-rayed before surgery and it appeared to still be there, but when they actually got in they found it to be gone and that it was still big from sitting there so long.

@marsha32 This doctor is big on adding lemon to your diet. I am sure that helped. I can research herbs for kidney health, but I doubt she would take them.

What herbs did you take. According to this doctor nothing will dissolve it, but I do not argue, just go ahead and do what I think is best. Your breakfast drink should have been some help preventing it.

@GardenGerty I don't remember it was what the herb shop said to take. I mixed it with fresh made lemonade as suggested.

I have been cutting on salt lately and buying salt with less sodium. I hope it helps.

I do not think I eat too much salt, but it is one of those things that the more you cut down the less you miss it.

@marguicha That is true. There are many other flavorful spices and things that we learn to appreciate.

@GardenGerty I have discovered that salt and sugar can be left if doing it little by little.

Too large to pass without lithotropy. Her daughter just got a nursing home resident back from this procedure that did not have much in the way of pain. It may depend on how you handle pain and also whether or not it is blocking a duct or something. Cranberry is good to prevent infections. Her doctor recommends lemon and other citrus, though.

Even when we do not add table salt a lot of our foods have it anyway. Good job being diet conscious.

We have to pay attention to what our body is telling us if we want to be healthy and enjoy life.

Here they recommend herbs and spices and lemon juice to substitute and give that punch of flavor.

My husband had a kidney stone a few years back. It was terribly painful.

This is what I hear, but so far hers is not painful. It was kind of a fluke they discovered it because she is not having symptoms yet. My doctor says that diabetics get lots of kidney stones and other kidney damage.

I didnt' realize that too much sodium causes kidney stones. I limit my sodium because I have high BP but this is valuable information

This is the first I have ever heard this. I am going to start drinking more lemonade, though. I like lemon in my water too.

@Ianist Funny how our fingers sometimes go astray. Actually my sister is getting healthier all the time, but each time they correct one thing they find something else. I am proud of her for making the health changes that she does.

@GardenGerty yeah, I'm not a big fan of typing on the phone. Good for her then, hopefully all the problems could be cured
