Victim Blaming Has Got To Stop

WA Police posted a CCTV footage of a mugging incident in my area on Facebook hoping that the public could identify the culprit. It was broad daylight and the CCTV captured the thief doing a turn and heading towards the victim to grab her hand bag. Since she was gripping it too firmly the thief wasn't able to get it so he ran. Unfortunately the victim landed face flat on the road. As I read the comments of the netizens, I can't help but be appalled at how people were blaming the victim for the incident saying "she's made herself an easy target". According to them she should be putting the HAND bag on her shoulders to prevent mugging. It irked me because I have been a mugging victim too. How could people lack sympathy and be so critical on events like that? Victim blaming is very common in society today. Like a woman getting rape could get blamed for not wearing the decent clothes. Seriously?! Shouldn't we be condemning the criminal and not the victim? Does becoming an easy victim give crime doers a right to do the crime? What are your thoughts?

Aren't netizens becoming judgemental? Only believing what they are seeing like they are smarter than the others?

That's exactly what I was thinking too. They act so all knowing but the truth is no one expects for those kind of situation to happen to them. Much less In broad daylight. And no one also willingly wants to be a victim. She had a handbag and they want her to carry it in the shoulder which wasn't really possible in the first place. Seeing that the thief wasn't able to get away with it meant that she was at least mindful of her belongings and clasping it tightly.

@Lucky15 True it's easy for them to say. But seriously they should practice more empathy rather than giving unsolicited negative comments.

How could these netizens be so mean! The victim needs comfort and sympathy instead. If this mean netizens experienced the same, they will surely understand the feeling.

@flapiz So you too had this traumatic incident! I understand why you fell for the victim this much. I supposed the victim will not be happy to read those mean comments, I just hope she will not be able to read them anymore.

@salonga Well it's on Facebook so it will be just a short time before she sees it. Luckily it wasn't such a high resolution video to spare her of the whispers by people who've seen the post.

Exactly. I felt extra angry because I for one had been a victim of mugging and it's really traumatic. It's been months ago but I am still paranoid and scared from the experience. So I can't understand why the netizens are hating on the victim. What would the victim have felt if she reads their insensitive remarks?
