Back to work on some coasters

I mentioned a few posts ago that Collings guitars of Austin Texas had been kind enough to send me some raw spruce wood sound holes from the guitars they make there. I finally got started making some new coasters. So far they've been stained. Once I'm done staining them, each will receive several coats of satin polyurethane, so they don't bend when wet. Then each will get felt bottoms hot glued on. Each pair takes several weeks to make, mostly due to drying time. Do you have a favorite color? The ones in the back are stained with five coats of Watco Walnut Danish Oil. The ones in the middle have one coat of Minwax Jacobean stain on them. And the ones in the fromt have one coat of Minwax Red Mahogany stain on them.

I like the ones in front I think. Did you say in that other post that you sell these.

Those have only one coat on them. I just started them today. I may add another coat. I mostly give them to my guitar playing friends. Very occasionally I sell a pair.

All 3 look like nice colors. Very nice of the guitar place to send you raw wood so you can make coasters!

Yeah. In fact, I promised them I'd send them a few pairs of finished coasters. I should get on that.

Sounds like you have to put a lot of details into it. Well done.

It's just a matter of patience--of doing each step one at a time, and not rushing things.

@sol_cee Patience is one of the few virtues I possess. I've worked with children for several decades.

Thanks for the feedback. It's a slightly unfair comparison, because they have the most coats of stain on them. But I like walnut as well.

Neat way to upcycle. I just recently was introduced to Watco Teak Oil.

I haven't tried teak. Do you have any pictures of the results?

It seems most people like either the walnut or mahogany. I sometimes combine mahogany and jacobean.

You canmake each one of a different color. Then people can recognise their glasses.

Pony, may I ask what is the diameter of those coasters that you are making? Can you make small stools out of them, or foot rests you know...if only I had half your talent...

@TheHorse ..no..it is not easy to assess the size of coasters from pictures....they looked fairly large so I thought they were larger than the one we use..

@TheHorse .. Pony...we get small clock instruments here. Those can be attached to make small table clocks. The other thing I could think of was using them as greeting cards, invitation cards, and cards at tables during any functions. Depending upon the person may be you could have a nice picture of mother Mary with baby jesus in the center and some decoration around it. Valerie would love it. Business cards are already being made with such things. :) May be these can be used as invitation cards as well. Personally. I would make a smiley and hang in the car. lol.

Oh! They're only about 3 1/2" across. Foot rests for pet guinea pigs?

All three sets are beautiful, pony! If I were choosing from those you have there, I prefer the pair furthest from me. They most closely match my furniture. They apparently are the most costly for you to make, too, so I would expect their cost to be higher than the other sets, right?

Thanks! I'm going to have to stop by Home Depot and get some fresh polyurethane. I think I'll be making several pairs over the next few weeks.
