Sindoor or Sindooram is traditionally applied along the parting line of a woman's hair or as a dot on the forehead. This is a mark of married women in Hinduism. A Single woman wears dots in varied colors but does not wear sindoor. The Widows do not wear Sindooram signifying that their husband is no longer alive. Traditionally Sindooram is made from Bixa Orellana Pods. But, commercially available sindoor contains dyes and chemicals like vermillion containing mercury and lead..

That commercial sindoor sounds dangerous if it has mercury and lead in it.
