When you think of koi fish, the last thing that comes to mind is that koi fish is edible. You will be surprised to hear that many popular and expensive aquarium fishes are edible. In fact, the expensive breed of fish, such as Asian Arowana, is food in the native river. When you fork out a few hundred dollars to buy a single fish, you definitely do not have the heart to eat it. Koi fish can be very expensive too. Many Koi fish are award winners, and the owners will not allow you to steam the fish for dinner. Koi fish was formerly noticed by the rice farmers in Japan. Some farmers treated them as normal edible fish, while a few smart ones could see the value of promoting this breed internationally.

I think most aquarium fish are edible. In fact, goldfish are edible too, because they are a cousin of the koi fish. Not many people think about eating their pets.

@salonga I think your friend will want to chop you up and feed you to the fish if you ever say that! Some people keep goldfish for Feng Shui purpose, and they will never think about eating them.

I am sure you can find the fish in the river. Especially when pet owners let the fish grow so big that they fill up the tank or pond, they will release it into the river.

I think they will chase you out if you go there with a net to catch the koi fish. Koi fish can be very expensive, though they grow very big. A single koi fish is enough to feed a family of 4.
