Montezuma Castle National Monument, is near the town of Camp Verde, AZ. This is a Native American cliff dwelling which is like a high rise built into the cliff. It is 5 stories high with about twenty individual rooms where the Sinagua Indians lived around 600 years ago. There is a visitor center and a wheel chair accessible path to the ruins which makes it a popular stop for people of all ages. They have many visitors come here to the Monument.

That must be a fascinating place to visit. The name of Montezuma gives the impression of a migration from the Aztec and Inca regions.

Do they say what happened to those who lived in them? I've heard that for decades they thought it was the Anasazi who built them, don't quote me on that though cuz I didn't read it in any official articles.

@rebelann No reason is given but it could have been drought or another tribe moving into the area or any such thing like that. They do think the Anasazi came sometime later.

It's such a shame that early European pioneers destroyed everything that had anything to do with native Americans @Marcyaz such a hateful group of people.

@rebelann Yes and the Native Americans still have a hard time today at least some of them do.

Sadly, although we live about an hour away, we still haven't taken the time to go there. Maybe when the weather cools down a bit... It's finally hitting the triple digits around here.

@yukimori My friend had called me and said they are having really hot days now with triple digits. You do need to take a drive and see it sometime if you only are about an hour away.

@Marcyaz It's been on my list of things to do for ages, but we've just never gotten around to doing it. Once it cools down a bit, I think we'll take a drive over there with the kids.

I have been there as well as all National Parks and Monuments in AZ. This is an excellent example of cliff dwellings, a smaller version of Mesa Verde.

wow it looks so complicated construction. The mud construction is very prominent one. The mud which was used earlier in construction was equal to strength of 100 pillars. It wont be washed out also

I suppose the dwellings were built into the cliff for safety reasons, but I wouldn't want to live there.

@cmoneyspinner Yes they were built for the tribes safety as other nations could declare war on them.
