The Mystery of the Smelly Smell has been solved! Last week I wrote about how, late at night, my hubby and I were exposed to a nasty, stinky, toilet smell. A smell that overpowered our whole house. After much sniffing we deduced the smell was coming from outside and not, thankfully, from our house. We were flummoxed by the situation. Today the family went on a walk and had a picnic in a parky area. On the way there we noticed a smell. A familiar smell. On the way back we paused and sniffed around like a bloodhound catching the scent of his prey. There it was again! The smelly smell of something that smelled smelly! Hubby gestured toward where the bulk of the smell was coming from. We figured it was either from the new construction going on, or the Water Treatment Plant near the new construction. So, the mystery is solved! Sort of. We think. Now I can't help but wonder, if the smell was so bad here that night, how did the folks at Ground Zero make it through the night?!

@sol_cee Oh, that's so sweet. You thought I was Daphne. No, I'm the geek with glasses. She's a redhead, too. Anyway, the turtleneck keeps the vampires from sucking my blood.

Oh what a relief it is not something on your property. Gross that the smell is still around though. That would make for a very unappetizing picnic.

Thankfully we couldn't smell it during our picnic. It seems to be trapped in one, specific area. Except when the wind hits it just right, of course.

It amazes me where developers will choose to place housing, and who will buy the housing or rent it under those circumstances. In my previous town a more upscale addition was developed out in a bunch of farms/ranches. Boy, those people who bought those pricey homes sure complain about the manure smell a lot. It has been there all the time. They chose to live there. I know, probably not relevant to your situation. It may be something you only smell if the wind comes from a certain direction, or you may not smell it at all once construction is complete.

This was the first incident in over 4 years of living here that we've smelled it. So I'm guessing it's not always like that. Especially for the people who live close to the Treatment Plant. We saw a house in that area for sale but between the new construction, the Sewer Plant, and the train tracks running along the back of the property we promptly ran away from THAT idea. Why can't developers have as much common sense?

They're developing a lot into a retirement home or something. It just happens to be close to the treatment plant. Those future residents are going to be in for some, um, interesting nights.

@Hatley You'd think the people who bought the lot and made the building plans would have researched the area a little better.

I just read the other post about it. You found the source, but what is the solution?

We're hoping it was a fluke. Otherwise we're going to have to invest in nose plugs...
