I looked up as the metal doors closed, watching as the LED display flashed with each level I ascended. I hated elevators and none more so than those in hospitals.
They always seemed colder somehow, and more jolting, as if it's sole purpose was to shake you out of whatever funk you were in. I suppose it helped some of the more weary visitors to the hospital, but I always found it more forbidding than anything.
The number 9 flashed twice on the screen above my head as the mechanical voice of the elevator indicated that I had arrived on the 9th floor. The aforementioned "jolt" of the elevator car's halt happened just before the doors would open.
I say would because the doors did not,in fact, open. I stood there for a moment, halfway between aggravation at the wait, and apprehension that I might be stuck in the elevator's car.
Seconds ticked by and my heart's rate picked up as my breathing became labored. The panic was starting to set in already. I grabbed for my phone as a last coherent effort before my panic would cause my thought process to fizz out.
"Yes" I called out as my phone connected to the information center of the hospital. "I'm in an elevator stuck on the 9th floor." The voice on the other line soothed me as it assured me help would be on the way.
"Atleast you are in a hospital." The person said, intending to break me from the clawing fear that was setting in.
If only they knew that I hated hospitals most of all.
*I don't normally like to split up discussions but in this case I feel it would be in my best interest to do so. With that being said, this concludes part 1. I will further explain the reasoning behind said discussion at the completion of part 2*
