And Now For Something Completely Different

With apologies to Monty Python. I was stumbling around on Stumbleupon while I sipped my morning cup of coffee and stumbled across the coolest new tech device I'd seen in a while. It is a small device you can put at the base of your non-touch screen laptop and it will turn it into a touch screen. The device is called the Airbar. The Airbar creates an invisible lightscreen in front of your laptop screen and allows you to manipulate what is onscreen with your finger, a brush, or just about anything. It plugs into a USB port and works right out of the box. The Airbar is supposed to be priced at $49 when it hits the market later this year. I am seriously considering buying a couple, one for my older laptop at home, and one for my laptop at school, neither of which is a touch screen. Would this little device be something you might be interested in?
Check out AirBar by Neonode. It is a sensor bar that you attach beneath your PC screen. Then you can pinch, swipe, zoom and scroll to your hearts delight. Launching on CES in January and is available for pre-order right now. Plug-and-Touch, when you need i

Oh, yeah, I'd buy one if my laptop still worked. It needs about $160 worth of work.

@DWDavis If it works for a desktop I might be interested. Of course with our horrible exchange rate it will probably cost a fortune if it ever reaches South Africa, so I'm not sure I'd be able to buy one. Time will tell.

@DWDavis At today's exchange rate it would be about R750, but being imported the price would almost certainly be a lot more than that.

@Gina145 At $49 USD, what would that be in Rand?

That sounds really interesting DW. I hope to know how it works out for you. Yes I would buy one for my son. I already have a touch screen myself.

Hi, @TiarasOceanView. It seems like it's been a while since we crossed paths. I will post a review of the AirBar when I get one.

I have to say that I am an old time computer user and I have always hated to touch a screen. I still prefer to type and use a mouse or a pad, but I really dislike a touch screen.

I use the touch screen on my notebook more when I'm away from home, such as working in a coffee shop. At home I stick with my wireless mouse.

@DWDavis I understand, this makes sense, because it's easier not to have a mouse attached when we work outside the house.

It wouldn't be anything for me, I even hate that my smart phone has a touchscreen .

My wife doesn't like her touchscreen phone either. She'd much prefer a tiny slide out keyboard but those are hard to find these days.

Not for a desktop, but maybe my laptop. I tend to use my tablet most of the time anyway. I imagine these will be a short-lived plaything as technology will enable everything to be touchscreen soon anyway.

If it had come out only a year or two ago I think it would have had a longer product life. In the next few years, as people replace their last generation laptops and desktops with touch screen devices it will become obsolete. Still, for $49, it if gets me an extra year with this laptop before I decided to upgrade it will be worth it.

Do you prefer touch screen to a mouse? I find it much easier and have more control with a mouse. I just bought a wireless mouse to go with a new laptop. This device you speak of creates a screen in which you move your finger directly on the image? Like I place my finger directly on your headline and the post comes up rather than mouse or touch screen arrow?

This device seems to work much like a regular touch screen so I think it will do the things you mentioned. I do prefer to use my mouse but sometimes on the laptop at school it would be easier to point things out or highlight things for my students if I could just point to it on the screen while I'm teaching.

@JohnRoberts I will post a review of the AirBar if I get one. With my memory, I may have forgotten all about it by the time it hits the market, LOL.

Sounds intriguing but I don't know that I'd be bothered. I won't tell my husband about it though! :)
