Idle hands are the devil's workshop

They say Thursdays are throwback's, but what am I to throwback if there is nothing apparent that needs to be thrown? “Memories warm you up from the inside. But they also tear you apart.” ~ Haruki Murakami If i ponder on the quote by Haruki then my reflection on this throwback Thursday will be a teary one. Nostalgia and memories always make me a little glad while being sad, somewhat of an ambivalent state. For a few weeks now I have been knitting all the left over wool's in the house into squares that I can put together into a nice throw for my big bed. My gran taught me to knit when i was only five years old - she said I was a natural. All my winter school holiday's were spent knitting jerseys, rugs, barbie clothes, and baby clothes later . . she would constantly remind me that "idle hands are the devil' workshop" and for this, my hands have never been idle and luckily have steered away from the devils workshop. While watching TV and me knitting in the dark last night, my youngest daughter requested that I buy her a few balls of wool in the shades of blue, so that she can join me in the winter evenings as she is feeling a little idle. From gran, to mom, to me, to my daughter - the legacy lives on . . . . how blessed am I. Maybe one day on a similar Throwback Thursday, she will remember these days with her mom! My photo is of my own progress - many squares “Nothing is ever really lost to us as long as we remember it.” ~ L.M. Montgomery

@Inlemay I would get frustrated and less soothed, I am bad at knitting, coloring maybe. I used to hand sew. Maybe that again

you are right - but our hands are the instruments of our minds - I find knitting very soothing and while thinking about it, maybe you should get some yarn and just knit and knit to sooth that mind of yours too

I don't believe in the devil but I do believe we must always remain busy. Of course there are times we don't feel up to it - I was so tired last night that doing anything except sit like a zombie in front of the TV was the only choice, but most of the time isn't like that, I am constantly doing something.

@Inlemay There is a time and a place to zone out, everyone needs it. But the majority of the time I don't, I remain active, even when watching TV I am doing other projects.

did you have the remote on hand - then your hands were busy (the devil is a metaphor in this phrase - being tempted to be lazy)

I wish i have hands like yours. I guess seeing pros and their works online makes me a frustrated knitter.

Oh my, this saying is what I have heard for 8 years in my Catholic school, where I learnt to knit when I was 6 years old and to embroidery, sewing and mending. Happy memories? No, not really.

I love handwork very much, I got most of the love and inspiration as well as so much motivation from my Gran. Now its time to pass it on to my daughters

I am about to start using up scraps of baby wool crocheting beanies for premature babies. There is only enough of each dye-lot for bootees or beanies.

I had a few strands of 3ply that was used for babies things, I used it up double time to make it thick enough to fit into the size of the squares. You are very kind do be doing that.

@Inlemay That's the trouble with scraps of wool particularly when all different plys are used.

I love both the quotes. A lot of my time know is spent in the land of memories.... Anne is one of my favourite heroines. Would you believe it, my mother crocheted up woollen squares like the ones you are displaying and made it into a cover (huge one it turned out to be) for me when I got married.

@Inlemay :)so glad that these arts aren't really dying out. Nowadays i see so much of ready made stuff at malls.... That sounds very inspiring to me too. I'm going to finish off all the wool that is lying around but will have to start that in winter as it is too hot now.:) I think i'll try some embroidery. Pl check out my discussion post ...there's a reason why

My brother tried very hard, he was left handed and his knitting was always so tight the wool turned to cardboard.
