Toxic? V...No, it was benign!

We health care providers, use these words "toxic" and "benign" in relation to our work in the hospital setting. "Benign" would mean the ward is not so busy and we can have our meals on time, give proper care to our clients, administer medications and procedures on time, and receive and endorse clients from the outgoing and incoming staff on duty from the previous and the next shifts. "Toxic" is the other way around. When we say "the ward is toxic", this would mean so many clients (patients) to take care of (consider the ratio of one nurse to handle 25 patients); not eating meals on time, delaying of drugs administration, delay in giving procedures and treatment, and delay in endorsing the clients to the next shift. Adding to that, the doctors needing the attention of the already exhausted nurses to follow up their orders to be carried out. I and my students thought that we will be toxic on our first duty day. Alas! It was not. Why? It was because the chief of hospital has not yet signed our MOA, and our schedules of duty were not yet submitted to the wards of the hospital. (I am in medical ward, level 4 students on Mondays and Tuesdays, and OB ward for level 2 on Thursdays and Fridays). Yesterday and today, we stayed in the third floor of the hospital and waited for the call from the nurse training office to inform us of the MOA. It was finally signed at 1 PM this afternoon. Toxic? I made them toxic; I gave them a 15-item quiz, and I was surprised because some of them forgot the right answers to the questions I asked. But generally, our duty was benign, because we sat in an air-conditioned area. Next Monday, it will be a toxic duty day for them. My students expect that from me; it is for them anyway.

I'm sure they appreciated the benign day. I'm glad it wasn't toxic. Plenty of time for that in the coming days.

I had heard about that when my father was in the hospital the night after his operation. We were requesting every now and then for the nurses and doctors to come and check on him because he's already feeling pain. But the nurses said they were toxic because they had an ambushed patient just near our room. We were thinking if that patient was A_______ because he had lots of guards, even from the PNP. That was also the time when PGMA was confined there. Maybe they gave more attention to these VIPs. They only came after about two hours of requesting.

yes those words are constantly said by the NOD's (nurses on duty) when there are so many patients in the ward. that is whyi always tell my students to have heavy breakfast because they might miss their meals due to toxicity.

25 patients for each nurse are a lot. Are you able to offer a good service having to take care of so many patients?

@LadyDuck yes that is why the nurse manager often asks me what ward should i give to my students.my learners do total nursing care to the clients they are assigned to.

that is why there are contractual nurses and students to lighten up their workload. when we are on duty and when i handle third year students, i take a whole ward of 14 clients.

It's really fun here, we learned more from this site. I thought, benign means a tumor that is not malignant and toxic means poisonous. Glad that you share it to us that benign is that the ward is not busy and toxic means more patients and busy.

i agree with you my friend.even the teachers are more toxic than the students take my case. I have 7 students. One will be the team leader, one to prepare and give medications.the remaining four should have 2 patients each so i will handle 14 people in the ward.
