Pet Peeve: Checkboxes with Different Meanings on the Same Page

Have you ever filled in details online at site for one thing or another? Many of them have checkboxes relating to whether you agree to the terms and conditions, and whether they are allowed to email you stuff. What is annoying is that sometimes the checkboxes are automatically filled in, sometimes they aren't. Sometimes you have to tick them to say that it is okay for them to email you more rubbish, and sometimes you have to tick them to say it isn't. What's most annoying is when they vary in the same form. Check this box to say we can use your details, and then check this box to say we can't use your details for something different. I'd prefer they stayed consistent through a form. I know why it's done, though; to dupe you into still getting junk. Image: Freeimages.com
