Feeding Pets a Vegan Diet

I was a strict vegan for a few years. I follow a plant based diet now, also recently trying to drastically reduce sugar and processed foods. I enjoy a high complex carbohydrate diet and I've chosen to eat this way because I am healthier for it and my body responds well to this diet. I've seen the ethical/environmental piece as a bonus. I follow a lot of vegans online, many have great advice and recipes. I feel like lately I've been seeing a lot of vegans talking about feeding their pets (commonly dogs and cats) a vegan diet. I feel this is at best unfair and at worst abusive. Dogs can handle a more grain based diet than cats, but it doesn't mean they should. I've owned dogs my whole life and I've never seen one prefer a carbohydrate over a protein. It's amazing to me that people who claim to care about animals make their own pets suffer by forcing their beliefs on the poor animal through diet.

Here I was, assuming you were going to say animals should eat a vegan diet. Ha! You got me! I came here prepared to be enraged and here you are making all kinds of sense! What am I going to do with my angst, now?

It seems that many animals have a different digestion system. And a different taste..

I am definitely with you on this one @vhiker89 . The original dogs and cats were from the wild and therefore ate meat so that also means that generations of dogs and cats should still be eating meat. It's fine to add diced carrots every now and then (helps clean the tartar from the teeth), but grains? Nope. There are more cases of cancer in dogs and cats today than at any time in history and it has also shorted their normal life-spans.

You're right. It is animal abuse. Cats will go blind on a vegan diet.
