What is up with Nintendo's American Branch?

So in voicing my brief interaction with Donkey Kong Jungle Beat to @Rikamaru, something crossed my mind:"What is up with Nintendo Of America's marketing strategies?"
See from what I understand Nintendo of America had a knack for selling the NES and SNES to American consumers, and the N64 as well. But come the GameCube, well I hear statistically, there were more PlayStation 2s sold than the GameCube.
But when the Wii rolled around, it became the market leader, as it was afforable, accessible to average nongaming joe, and got people off the couch. Not to mention the marketing of two representatives traveling in a smart car, playing with consumers with the Wii conveyed the console and how iit works rather well. And then you've got the WiiU. The "WiiU is an Upgrade" marketing campaign had me thinking:"So it's a tablet for the Wii?" Because in no way did they convey that it's a new console. It's no wonder it didn't sell as well as its predecessor.
My point bein:"Is it just me, or does Nintendo Of America tend to have trouble selling a new console once every generation to the general public? And why don't they seem to test it on a focus group to understand how to market it... Just... GAH!!!!! Dx It's frustrating

@Sarigi6141 I'm guessing it's expensive in Indonesia, but that's not the issue in the U.S., as the marketing was silly. The "Upgrade to WiiU" method had many of us thinking it was like a smart tablet for the Wii,and not a new console. I seriously think they should've tested the console on focus groups before marketing it to the masses and well gamers too.
