The roomie told me just a few minutes ago that her mom was bragging about how they did such a good job raising Cujo, the dog I rescued from their place.
Not that he was being beaten or anything, well, not by them anyway...
You see, Cujo is a small dog. I'm not sure if he quite tips the large small dog or the small medium dog rating, but he only weighed 25 lbs when we got him. He's now 14 and has lost a few pounds, but he's always been on the thin side.
I got him from the roomie's folks in 2005 when her dad was building our catio and said he was going to take him to the Cedar Park shelter.
Now, they kept Cujo because one of the roomie's nieces said she wanted them to keep him. Well, they did, and then she almost NEVER came back to see him.
Meanwhile, the big dogs they had were beating him up. I'm sure that he only got to eat after the big dogs were done. And since they never fixed their dogs, the female, Brownie, would go in heat and then Dragger, the puppy they kept who was all grown up by this time, would beat up Cujo for acting on his normal instincts.
So, I felt sorry for Cujo, and knew that he and Zoe, the roomie's dog, got on well enough when we had them watch Zoe when we went out of town in 2003, so we figured it would work well. Company for Zoe and someone who would actually take him to the vet...
Now, of the 3 dogs, Cujo is really the best behaved. Boe is sweet, but a bit hyper and Zoe was never really more than crate trained. I tried to get the roomie to house train her, but we can see how well that worked...
However, her folks had NOTHING to do with how he turned out. The fact that he's such a nice dog probably has more to do with his natural temperament because they did nothing for him, except for his getting bullied by the big dogs and having rocks thrown at him (and the other dogs) by the neighborhood kids.
I didn't really want a dog, but as far as dogs go, I could've had a much worse one.

Cujo sounds like a great dog. I hope he is having a decent life. All dogs and cats deserve that.

I agree, they do deserve that, that's why I took him. If they had taken him to Cedar Park's shelter when he was a cute puppy, he'd've found a good home, but at 3 or 4 years, not so much. Not that he'd've been put down, Cedar Park is a no-kill shelter, but he also deserved better than being in a cage.

@ElicBxn So glad he didn't have to go to the shelter. I'm glad it's a no-kill shelter though.
