Alligators in my letterbox

Homosassa Springs

My postman made his usual rounds this afternoon and deposited mail in my letterbox, although this time instead of delivering the usual bills he left a postcard displaying alligators. Alligators were probably the last thing that I expected to see in my letterbox. It was immediately obvious to me that this postcard was from @Jeanniemaries because she lives in Florida, which I associate with mosquitoes and alligators. As you can clearly see on the above image, these little pets reside at Homosassa Springs wildlife state park. These fascinating creatures are the closest link that I know of to the reptiles of the dinosaur age, although I certainly prefer viewing these on a postcard rather than face to face.

They aren't spectacular viewing at a zoo. They mostly lay there pretending to be some inanimate object.

Guard dog
Maybe so, but they would still make excellent guard dogs.

So true, this is why I went very close to a small one to take a photo, I thought it was fake.

@LadyDuck They're just waiting to catch you unaware. They're awfully quick when they choose to be.

It's not funny to see an alligator too close to you, they are big pets and do not look very friendly. If you go to Florida do not rent a small paddle boat to visit the swamps, after a few minutes you feel "followed".

They tend to be too rough skinned to stroke.

@Asylum I agree and they look at your hand with an unfriendly look while you are approaching. I would not try to pet one.

That one is not as pretty as the ones on the postcard. Of course those on the postcard probably spent a couple of hours in the makeup department before posing for the card.

No - you wouldn't want to meet alligators face to face. I also got a card from @Jeanniemaries today - mine showed flamingoes.

A flamingo bite sounds a little preferable to an alligator bite.

i was just talking about how i wouldn't mind living in florida, but the whole croc/alligator thing scares me

@Jeanniemaries I would be very dubious about a 12 foot alligator.

They are all over Florida in every body of water. I have a 12 foot one behind my house running loose. After I knew about that one I didn't go back in the woods again , i'm sure there's more than that . There are several small ponds and a creek . They walk across my sisters backyard frequently as her home backs up to a large pond and there are three in the pond that they know of. I've seen hers but I've never seen mine, my brother-in-law spotted The 12 foot one. He's a wildlife freak and loves to walk in the wilderness and the gators don't bother him .

Good idea, the letterbox rather than face to face. Visitors to places where they reside don't give them enough berth, and are injured or killed as a result. Not likely on postcards.

@Asylum And resorts as well. There have been children carried off by alligators because their parents did not realize there were alligators in the water. Horrible and dumb at the same time. It was in Florida. All water in Florida has alligators.

I remember our boat ride on the River Narmada when the boatman talked about alligators living in that river when we were almost midway. I just wanted to return to the shore and never enjoyed that trip.

pictures yes but real alligators probably won't fit in a letterbox or even a cat-flap - possibly for the best really

Considering that most postmen these days do not actually deliver mail but just wedge it in the letterbox, they could simply wedge the mouth into the opening.

@arthurchappell It is one of my pet hates, especially in the rain. It also announces my absence whenever I am on holiday, so my neighbour and I usually ensure that mail is not left on display.

I never requested any from Jeannie either. I mailed a selection of items to her such as tram tickets and leaflets, so included a cover letter. Once she acquired my address she automatically sent me a postcard.

I never thought of them being similar or the closest thing to what was alive during the dinosaur age. I've heard many stories concerning these creatures, but I've never seen one in person, nor is it something I'd want to do. Ha! In the sidebar, Inlemay is talking about receiving a postcard from you, Barry, just yesterday.

It is very kind of you to offer, but it would be a waste since I do not collect them. There are 3 Mylot members who I have been sending postcards to and since I move around a fair amount I have sent quite a few. As a result Jeannie probably felt compelled to send me a postcard.
