Absurd Movie Car Crashes

Barely any modern day action movie goes by without a car chase in which at least one car plummets over a cliff and explodes in a fireball on impact with the rocks below. In actuality it is quite hard to explode a car petrol (gas) tank. The crashes in which a car is seen crumpling and disintegrating as it bounces off the rocks are more realistic and even more interesting. Some cars used in the exploding vehicle stunts are clearly stuffed full of Semtex or dynamite and a few go off like nuclear blasts far beyond even a full fuel tank. I have seen a few cars on film even explode in mid-air before making contact with the ground or other obstacles. There is a terrific parody of the absurd exploding car image in an early episode of the TV series Family Guy – Peter and Meg Griffin are raced against by an Amish-man on a cargo free completely wooden cart pulled by a horse. Both cart and horse go over the cliff and explode. Hopefully readers will think of these words when watching the next movie featuring such scenes. They should take a left out of Professor Pat Pending's book and design a car that cannot be destroyed.

@Asylum that would be great - we staged a full Wacky Races cast stunt for an SF convention once - I was Rufus Ruffcut

@sunilparthan cars used in movies for crashing are usually only fit for scrap anyway - a good car is used for scenes right up to the crash/destruction, when a scrap-heap car is used in the final trashing - it's actually quite cheap compared to other effects and star-fees

@skysnap TV and movie maker Irwin Allen used to look at scripts and casually say - 'not enough happening here so blow something up'. His shows therefore had randomly inserted bursts of action just to liven things up without advancing the series

I do enjoy Mythbusters apart from repeating what went on earlier throughout the episodes

I've heard before that cars don't explode easily after an accident but there seem to be quite a few accidents here where the car actually catches on fire.

@JudyEv electrical wiring in cars can be quite combustible and with so much plastic fire can catch hold fast in a car - always best to get out quickly in even a minor crash

Exploding cars in movies and TV have been a staple for decades. They just love spectacular car explosions. I have never been enamored of them as it's rather a cheap mundane trick. An exception would be the car blast at the conclusion of the race in Bullit.
