Lately, things have been going bump in the night. There are strange noises. Once, I heard a low whistle. The phone rings in the middle of the night and no one is there and there is no caller ID. I see shadows of things that are not there. This is my prayer. "From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggedy beasties And things that go bump in the night. Good Lord, deliver us!" from The Cornish and West Country Litany, 1926 Do things ever go bump in the night at your house? What happened and what did you do about it?

We hear footsteps and sometimes I see shadows, or a reflection in the mirrors. Other times I have noticed the curtains move, but the windows were closed.

@akalinus I have no idea who is around, but surely I feel a presence.

Wow, that is strange. Who or what do you think is doing it? We have a rocking chair downstairs and sometimes I see it moving and hear it creak when no one is there and I am not even near it.

I live in a wood-framed house with a high, steep roof, and cathedral ceilings. Living here in Florida, it gets very hot during the day, so the house is always creaking as the heat causes all the building to expand. At night, when it cools down outside, the opposite happens, and you hear a lot of creaking from the building contracting as it cools off. For anyone who didn't know better, it could be pretty freaky, listening to the wood creak throughout the night! I'm used to it, so it doesn't bother me, but when guests stay over they often mention all the strange noises they hear during the night!

Those are noises you get used to. Your guests must get a little antsy wondering what is creeping around in the night. Strange noises do bother me if I can't get to the source of them.

It's funny you write this now . . . my little son just woke up (the kids really slept in this morning) - and he said he awoke to a thump near his bedroom wall. I just told him the house creaks and makes noises sometimes - that's just what houses do if they are made with wood and have space in them. He thought it was our stupid neighbors - but I know even they won't actually come that close to our house - and just to thump our walls? I have a friend who is certain that his thumps around the house are from his late grandfather - apparently he was a great jokester .

I think people rapidly become aware of a different sound that what they are used to hearing. When you hear a strange noise, you won't rest easy if you can't figure out what caused it.

@akalinus That's true - especially if the sound keeps coming back. My little son didn't buy the creaking house theory - he believes something had to make that thumping sound. I did hear a similar sound as we were talking . . . it sounded like a little pebble was thrown from the outside. The unexplainable can make one feel uneasy.

@much2say It does me. I wake up immediately if I hear a strange sound. Who could be throwing rocks at your house?

@akalinus A few times I thought I heard a knock at the door. At other times my husband and I have both heard a baby crying when ours is sleeping and the TV is off.

Some bumps here mean cat-astophy. One of my computers had to be replaced due to one of those bumps in the night. Not long ago it happened again. Computer still works this time around. I did not tell my hubby about the latest wham!! in the early hours.

@akalinus I have had conversations with the felines. They just stick their tongues out at me and go on their way.

Our roof contracts with changes in temperature. Can be quite startling at night.

@dianadee We do have cats that climb our tree and run around on the roof. I understand those noises, it is other noise that is more mysterious.

@akalinus Sometimes there are extra noises such as the vervet monkeys jumping from the trees onto the roof. It is such a game for them. That does not happen at night though.

I think all houses make strange sounds and we don't notice them most of the time. Sometimes the neighbors will make a noise and it sounds like it's right in the house. I make myself not pay attention to the stranger noises!

I love investigating when these sort of things happen, there might be a logical explanation like the strange noise in one of our bathrooms, turned out to be just a dipper floating on a pail, it makes a strange sound every time it hits the side of the pail or the cover sounds get magnified at night when it's quiet. On the other hand, it could also be supernatural, Philippine folklore has a lanky giant or "mantiw" that loves to whistle at night

@akalinus hahaha, once i also heard a whistle coming from our garden, people say they have felt or seen things there, when i opened my jalousie window I saw a lanky shadow pass but it could also be a shadow of the trees, there are also times the dogs would bark for no reason, so to conclude, i always keep my balance and keep an open mind when it comes to these things

@louievill I think the Bible says something about beware of familiar spirits. I have not seen anyone, just hear sounds. If you can't identify the source, your imagination takes over.

Our house creaks and groans a bit too but also there are big steel beams which heat and contract and make quite loud bangs from time to time. I like to know what's causing noises too.

@RubyHawk My son lived in a place where it sounded like the people upstairs were bowling in the middle of the night. Another person had two parrots that screeched all night and a dog who moaned all night.

I just heard a noise in my front yard. I went and checked on it, and found a stray cat sitting in my yard, and making the noise. He looked at me, and still comfortably resting there.

been in that situation a few times and believe me there is usually a real, scientific explanation for it even tho it scares the heck out of you. here in Florida, I would say either a critter messing around outside or your attic or else something blowing around. not much surprises me here lately . have seen critters never seen up close before.

When I had for cats they were all over the house in the middle of the night. They made lots of bumps in the night. Not so much now with just one cat.

Sometimes, I think cats see or sense something that we humans cannot see. They act weird, yowling and jumping for no reason.
