Day 126
Psalm 119:57
Psalm 119:57 CHETH. Thou art my portion, O LORD: I have said that I would keep thy words.
58 I entreated thy favor with my whole heart: be merciful unto me according to thy word.
59 I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies.
60 I made haste, and delayed not to keep thy commandments.
61 The bands of the wicked have robbed me: but I have not forgotten thy law.
62 At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto thee because of thy righteous judgments.
63 I am a companion of all them that fear thee, and of them that keep thy precepts.
64 The earth, O LORD, is full of thy mercy: teach me thy statutes.
Throughout life, we take portions of various things from the food we eat to the work we do, and the hobbies we’re involved in.
What do you do with your portion? If it’s food, you eat it. If it’s a work project, you have your part in it and work on it to the best of your ability. It’s the same with your hobbies. You don’t want to let anyone down with the portion assigned to you or you volunteered for. When put together with everyone else’s portion, it works in perfect harmony.
I’m reminded of the movie Kindergarten Cop where Arnold Schwarzenegger played the role of a Kindergarten teacher. In one scene, he taught the children the Gettysburg Address, but each child had a portion, and when they all said their part, it was perfect.
For the psalmist, his portion was God. As such he wanted his life to be perfect. He followed God’s laws with all his heart, and sought to keep his words and his testimonies. Doing so he wasn’t afraid of anyone who would come against him because he knew God would be with him and protect him.
As Christians, our portion should also be Jesus Christ, God’s Son. When we accept Jesus as Savior and Lord, we want to do all we can to study the Bible, pray, and seek to do whatever we can to make our lives perfect before him.
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
Our portion in this life is to treat others the way we want to be treated.
Matthew 7:12 Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets. (KJV)
Our portion is to love God and love each other.
Deuteronomy 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,
13 To keep the commandments of the LORD, and his statutes, which I command thee this day for thy good? (KJV)
Deuteronomy 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. (KJV)
Mark 12:30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these. (KJV)
As the psalmist wanted to make God his portion and obey him with his whole mind and body, so should we. When we do we will find God has made us his portion and will do all he can to protect us and bless us, showing us mercy and favor in everything we put our hearts and minds to doing.
Let’s pray: Father, let my portion be found in you. Help me do my best in everything I do. Help me to love those you place in my life, and be you to them. In Jesus’ name, I pray, amen.
