Have You Killed Snails In Your Life?

Sapphire showers and the damaged turmeric plants by thelme55

I have and I murdered more than a dozen of them. Since it was raining almost everyday, my garden was a bit flooded. I was glad it was not all part of the garden. It was only the part where the KangKong (water spinach) vegetables were growing. I did not exactly know how to conquer the snails which were climbing even on our bamboo fence. Some of the snails were climbing on the branches of my torch ginger plants. Some leaves of the plants including the turmeric are getting bald, eaten by those snails. I asked my hubby, who is still in Germany, what to do. He told me to put salt on the face of the snails and they would die a slowly death. He was right. My small nieces were helping me killing the snails. I suppose they are all dead now. I mean the snails. I hope nothing will come out of the blue again. Now I am wondering. Are these the same kind of snails the French people are eating? Have you killed snails from your garden? How did you do it? By salt or another method of killing? I heard beer can kill snails as well. Thanks for reading. Happy Sunday and happy new week ahead

I always kill a snail that has crept on a closed window . Yes, my mother does that too , put salt , she said . But i guess i can't do it , put it on the face of the snail because i don't even want to touch the shell of a snail.

Lol! I am getting braver. Thinking of how those critters ruined my plants makes me angry. I just get them off the plants with my fingers and tortured them with salts.

When my house had a lot of snails. I used to collect them and drop them back into park nearby. This way I avoided killing them.

A few weeks ago, when I arrived in my Philippines house empty, I saw some snails climbing inside the wall of my kitchen. Of course I was scared @skysnap. I just pulled them off the wall and through them outside my fence. Now I am on war with these critters

@thelme55 there are some birds like robin who eat them and also dayal bird eats them too. or even crow. you can maintain the natures balance by letting nature eat them back. ;)

i think these Japanese snails are not edible, but we can kill them by putting a pinch of salt in their mouths.

What kind of snails are those? Are they big or small like the golden snails seen at the ricefield?

@thelme55 They are voracious eater of plants! Maybe they are those called "Japanese snails," that are so big. I also tried to get rid of them when I see them in my garden. Just throw them away.

The large ones or "Japanese snails" are the pests, they were brought by the Japanese to the Philippines as a kind of biological warfare to starve out the resistance ( at least that is what my aunts told me), yes there were still a lot during the 60's in our old house in Manila and yes we killed them with salt, nobody ate them. The small native "kuhol' are the edible ones, less harmful cause they stay mostly in ponds, these are what we eat, cooked in coconut milk or done French escargot style. I'm not sure but the former First lady Imelda Marcos I think introduced the golden snails as cheap food, they are also edible but in due time became pests because they multiplied rapidly, we also eat this although we prefer the native snails.

I do find a snail or two in my orchids once in a while. I have to be monitoring them carefully. With orchids I have to repot them and change the medium completely.

no snails 'round these parts, too dry i reckon. i fear i couldn't kill 'em slowly with salt, the thought 'f their sufferin' too much fer me to bear. but, i reckon ya gotta do what'cha gotta do to protect 'cher plants. here, 'tis grasshoppers that plague, fortunately they aint's bad's last year. where they were e'en eatin' the bark off the trees.

@thelme55 the French grow them specially. They are very large snails so not the garden variety. Glad you found a way to kill them. This year we don't have any in the garden but I do see a lot of them along the way when I go shopping. We have these white snails.

We had a lot of snails when I lived on Guam - they had the African Giant Snail. I don't remember if I killed any of them or not. They were prevalent. I might have stepped on a few.

Sometimes, when there are plenty of snails in our lawn, I gather them and throw them out of the fence to be ran over by vehicles passing. Sometimes, my wife also puts salt on them like what your nieces did.

It is much to dry and hot here for snails to survive so I have never seen any here.
