I Heard From My Doctor

Last week I have a coarse needle biopsy of the right and left side of my thyroid (originally though it was a fine neddle biopsy), no wonder it hurt so much. Anyway I have been waiting to talk to my doctor about the results.
Is it cancer or not?
Surprise, surprise, it is indeterminable. They aren't sure.
When you get back a result like this they take it out. It turns out that they are going to try to shrink it first, then take it out, give radiation pills, then chemotherapy. At least, that's how it stands right now.
I am not going to say I am not scared. Of course I am. But it is said to be the most curable of all cancers. Besides that, they don't really know if it is malignant. They won't know until after the thyroid is taken out and tested.
Anyway, I am still left not knowing for sure but at least I still may not have cancer.

My thoughts and prayers are with you! I know you are scared, I have been there and the not knowing is the worst. The waiting after the surgery to hear the results too me felt like an eternity. Luckily it was not cancer, mine was on my ovary.

@melissa1024 it would be nice. I am glad and I know your daughter is glad that you heard yours was benign. I had no idea that the survival rate was so short for ovarian cancer. How awful.

@HazySue Yes, the survival rate is very low with ovarian cancer. I was told if I did have it even with chemo and such after a complete hysterectomy I would only live at the most 5 years.

Sorry to hear about this diagnosis. I'm praying for you that everything goes well, and that you are able to heal and get back to your normal self as soon as possible. Keep a positive outlook, our brains and our bodies really respond to positive thoughts!

@celticeagle to tell the truth they have reassessed the diagnosis and they feel it is better to go ahead and operate. They don't want to wait. I will be having radiation afterwards and they now say most likely chemo. But I am still the same positive person and I know it will all turn out ok.

I can understand your fear-I had 5 cancerous tumors removed from my bladder 13 years ago next month. Nobody knows that feeling unless they have had it given to them.
It sounds like they are erring on the side of caution, which is in your advantage, and hopefully this procedure will take care of it.

@HazySue It was scary, but you know, it has taught me what is really important in this world. I had the surgery 2 days after my 12th birthday, I had the Last Rites given to me by a priest on my 12th birthday-and that wasn't a bad thing, I has taught me to look for the silver lining to every dark cloud that comes along in my life.

@HazySue ugh!! I am trying and trying to get to your profile page and it keeps being overtaken by some financial report page. I will keep trying! It will not let me go back to your name, just automatically takes me back to the other page over and over and over.
I hope these frustrations get taken care of here on mylot.

They are going to shrink it and then remove the entire thyroid? My husband had a rare disease when he was about 20 that caused his thyroid to grow very large and it got so big it would block his windpipe and he would choke trying to even swallow a small pea. He had surgery to remove 3/4ths of it. He never had any problems after that but he only lived to be 28 so we don't know if he would have had to take synthetic thyroid medication when he was older or not.

@shagging I am so sorry about your husband. They have reassessed their diagnosis and have decided to removed the entire thyroid and lymph nodes right away. I am having a problem with swallowing. The nodule on the left side has grown so large it is pressing against the wind pipe and growing downward.

Good luck and think positive. Thyroid cancer is in the top 5 of most curable cancers, I believe prostrate cancer is #1, that's what my husband's urologist told us when he was tested for it. I wonder why they don't re-do the biopsy and have it tested someplace else. I would think insurance would almost require a 'second opinion'. If it was me I would have it removed and hopefully avoid chemo and radiation.

@HazySue My mother had hers removed but they left a small portion so she didn't have to take meds for the rest of her life. I do have a friend who had hers totally removed and she takes meds, not a big deal. neither of them had cancer.

@AbbyGreenhill to tell the truth I would rather just have it taken out now. I don't like the idea of going into the hospital and getting an operation but I think in the end it might be better. I try to stay positive. I keep busy so I don't have time to dwell on it.

I don't know if I should be happy or sad for you. Going through all that treatment is most likely a good thing, and hopefully it will shrink and that will be the last word on the subject. Don't you just love the way doctors leave you hanging? I thought it was only me they couldn't figure things out without going right to the source to have a look inside.

@just4him they have decided that they do not want to take the time to try to shrink it. They will be operating in the next two or three weeks. I am waiting for an operation date. No, you aren't the only one they need to check, recheck, and check again.
