White noise is the answer...

I have gone through different stages in my life. I have fallen asleep to complete silence, when I am really tired. However, for the most part...I need some kind of white noise, in order to sleep.
Having a fan on is my first choice, but it has to be pretty loud, for it to be effective. If that does not work, then I can sleep to music. Any kind. It does not have to be soft or soothing. I can sleep to rock 'n roll... LOL
And many times...I fall asleep watching television. However, unlike most people...if I wake up to go to the bathroom or something... I don't reach for the remote and turn it off. I just continue to sleep with it on.
If we are having a storm, I can sleep through high winds, and thunder. However... If the lights go out...I immediately wake up.
Not sure what triggers it... But I have to have some kind of white noise to sleep.

It is funny how some of us need noise, and others need total silence.

Maybe that is what is currently wrong with me. I got used to the noise of the window air conditioner. Since we got the central air going again and aren't running that, I am having a terrible time getting to sleep. I hate to run it though just for the noise as it will run up the bill.

Then run a fan. That noise can resemble the air conditioner, depending upon what type of fan you get.

I know many people who run a fan year round for this reason. I think the reason my sister sleeps so well with her CPAP is not just the forced air, the moisture for her mouth breathing, I also think it is the white noise of the machine running, although hers is pretty quiet.

I have to sleep with the TV on. I did that al my life. I don't know any other way to fall asleep. I have tried to sleep in silence but I never got well rested. When I was married I had many battles about having the TV on. And I suffered horribly many nights without any kind of noise.

@teresatrotter It was difficult. Believe me. Now it is fine. I am divorced and with someone else. She is like me and that is awesome.

I imagine it can be difficult if you are married to someone, unless they need the noise too.

I don't need white noise to sleep. I used to play the radio in the van to help me stay alert when I was tired driving. I will wake up from any change to what is normal.

I've talked to a lot of people who need the noise to sleep. My brother in law keps the television on all night, too. He can't sleep without it. My sister has to turn it down though after he's asleep because he blasts the thing.
I like sleeping with the fan on in the summer sometimes. And I love sleeping near the ocean or a river or stream, anywhere I can hear water. But I don't *have* to have sounds going on to sleep.

My grandnephew 11 month old sleeps so tight when there is some white noise from a radio or TV.
