I have never been on a self drive holiday in a foreign country like USA or Europe for instance. I have read about it in travel magazines and newspapers. It sounds very exciting, interesting and adventurous. Of course, these trips are planned and done by professionals or seasoned travellers so they look good. But in reality I'm sure there are many obstacles and hiccups along the way.
Has anyone been on a self drive holiday?
What experiences have you gained that you can share with others?

@sishy7 Yes, I mean driving a car accompanied by spouse, family members and friends. What's your experience like? Is there a lot of unforeseen hassles? Is safety a huge factor?

@succeednow Well, I only drove in places where I felt comfortably familiar with so there wasn't really any major troubles or hassles...

@LadyDuck That's good. Care to share your experience? Did you meet with any major difficulties or hiccups? What are the most important things to prepare for?

@succeednow We never had serious problems or difficulties. In the past we booked the hotels and motels using the free lines of the major chains, in our days it's a lot easier with the Internet. Same for the car renting. The most important is to research first what there is interesting in the area to see and to draw a plan to know how many days you need to spend in every place.

Never had any experience, but I do like to read other traveler's experience when they go on solo travels. I'm sure it takes a lot of preparation and knowledge about the place, people and culture to make it a great experience.

@cahaya1983 Yes, I'm sure it'll take a lot of preparation to go on a self drive adventure. I just want to know what are some of the important things that others have personally encountered.

@kamruzzaman5ndc OK. Perhaps one day you get a chance to go on a self drive holiday and then you'll have some experience. Thanks for your comment.

For one thing, I do not drive, so there is no need to think about it.
Even if I can drive, I will not drive.
I rather just take a train or a coach, and doze off when I feel tired.
It is better to just relax and enjoy the scenery, rather than paying attention to the road condition all the time.

@succeednow I like to explore the country freely, but I do not like to have the hassle of driving even if I can drive.
I hate to travel by package tour.
My prefer mode is free-and-easy with the travel agency arranging the air ticket, and hotel for the first night, and the night before departure.
The rest of the time I can do my own arrangement.

@scheng1 OK, so you don't belong to this category of people who are adventurous and wish to explore the country freely on their own instead of having someone bring them to their destination. I guess there are pros and cons in whatever methods of travel and visiting. Depends on what you want I guess.
