Bye-Bye Betta

Today I went to feed my betta fish, Bowie, and found him dead.
I'm sad. I've barely had him a month.
The first betta fish I ever had was named Alpha. Alpha lived for nealy 5 years.
All my other bettas have lived from 3 to 4 years, not counting the one I got from walmart that lived only about a week.
When we first got Bowie home I realized he was missing one of his pectoral fins. He seemed healthy otherwise but I knew it was a bad sign. I thought...what the heck. If I take him back they'll probably destory him. Lets give him a chance.
I'm sad to have lost my pretty little buddy. :(

They are not hard to keep at all actually. They are one of the easiest kinds of fish to care for. But they are treated horribly by breeders and in pet stores, so you're playing roulette every time you buy one. Will it be healthy enough to survive or not?
Bowie was not.

They live longer than most people think they do because most people don't give them proper care. I hate one dying on me so young!

@nonersays Yes, sorry to hear. Maybe the fishy wasn't as healthy or been on the shelf for longer in the small container there..

Aw, I'm sorry.
It's hard to lose a pet whatever species the critter is.

It is. And frustrating too, to have him such a short time.

I'm sorry you lost your fishie. I've been thinking of getting one, they're so pretty and restful to watch. I have a good friend who always has a fish at her house, but I don't think they ever live as long as your Alpha did.
My daughter tried to have an ocean aquarium, but it became a lot of work to keep everything going, achieving the right balance of nutrients and such. They really are beautiful, but I think they're tricky to maintain. She and her hubby are thinking about trying it again one of these days, though.

Betta are easier than a full aquarium for sure. You just got to remember, the need more water than a tiny vase or bowl (aim for at least 3 gallons but 5 is better) and the water must be warm becaue they are tropic fish. They are beautiful and can be fun to watch and interact with if cared for properly, and can live 4 to 5 years.
