Feeling Out of Place

This is one of the feelings that I do not want to encounter. But there are times that I cannot avoid it. When I was a student, there was one subject where I was grouped with some of my classmates who were very talkative. When they tried to make fun of me, I just kept quiet. I did my best to do the roles I needed to play but I did not make friends with them. Same thing happened now at my workplace. I am the most behaved among my colleagues. I speak very few words only. I am always the one who sits separately from the rest, reading a book or chatting with my boyfriend or some close and trusted friends online. I know I am not a sociable person. I tried to fit in the group but I always feel out of place. That is why many of my colleagues think I am weird and I have my own world. Are you a person just like me or you are my opposite? Have you ever experienced being out of place?

I always feel like that when I was still in a call center working as customers service representative. In our group , all of my colleagues are in their twenties.

@magallon Hi Cristy! I usually get intimidated if I am surrounded by people who are much older than me like my superiors. But with those younger with me, I don't get out of place much.

@annierose my colleagues in the call center were on the same age level. They almost have the same likes and dislikes while I was 46 then.

I sense being out of place within 5 seconds of arrival, or in whatever company, I dont like the feeling, and therefore normally make an excuse to leave.

@Inlemay Hi Inlemay! Yes, I always feel the same way when I am in a new place. Are you going to travel soon?

@Inlemay Do you need a visa to enter those countries? I hope you will be able to save enough money soon.

I am not a lonely person but I don't talk much with my colleagues during my regular jobs before. I don't open up my personal issues to them. Why? I am working in the company and don't mingle with them. It is strictly work-related relationship.

@Shavkat I do understand you. I am choosy too when it comes to who I am going to talk to. I do wonder if some of them feel I am a snob.

@annierose If they find me snob, I don't need to explain myself. I will just need to do my thing. For the family matters, it would be better to open up. You can do that, "kabsat'!

They sound close-minded and want you to be like them and if you're not and it sounds like you are just doing what comes natural so they need to lay off and mind their own business

@Vjvals That is true Val! I don't mind even I have only a few friends. I am choosy when it comes to people I will get along with.

I am sociable, but I only like groups of people who are quiet and well mannered. I feel out of place among people who act like crazy teenagers.

@LadyDuck Hi Anna! I don't get out of place with my close friends. Actually, I can talk more when I am with them but not all the times. I prefer to just listen rather than to talk.

I have had what is called "social anxiety" in many situations. It always takes me a long time to feel like I fit in wherever I am. That said, I think that feeling is more common than we think it is.

@CinnamonGrl Hi Sue! I agree with you. Just right now, I have found out that I am not alone with such social anxiety. I always feel this community.

I know how you feel. I often feel out of place when I am somewhere that I don't really know anybody. I am shy and quiet and never really know what to say. I prefer to keep to myself. After I get to know people I am much better around them. I am not a very social person and never really have been. I often wish that I was more outgoing and confident.

@Happy2BeMe Hi L_B! Oh, I am just like you. I stutter. I am not good in speaking, really. I feel nervous and all I want is just to dissolve in front of them sometimes.
