Beetroot Steaming for Beginners

Steamed Beetroot

Wandering around the shops this morning, I fancied beetroot and was about to grab some pre-packaged when I spotted uncooked, fresh, ones. I bought some of these for steaming. I have never steamed beetroot before, but the internet is a mine of information. Except that the instructions I looked at just said cut the beetroot into 'not too big pieces' and then steam for 10-15 minutes. My idea of not too big is different from theirs and it took 30 minutes of steaming. I added a tiny amount of vinegar and some chopped spring onion and after a good shake in the container, left it in the fridge for a few hours. Have to say that I've impressed myself, very tasty. So with about twice the beetroot for around half the price, I think I shall be doing this more often. Wonderful things steamers!

Once they've cooled down, you can quickly rub the skins off with a paper towel, much easier than peeling them all. I wore gloves for all this!

I have never seen fresh beetroots in our supermarkets. I love beetroots, I wonder if they can grow in my garden.

That sounds really easy. I love beetroot but mostly buy the tinned stuff.

@Ronrybs It's mostly eaten cold here as a salad vegetable and some people put it in fruit cake which was an eye-opener the first time I heard of it.

This was my first go at steaming. I have little doubt I will buy the prepared ones again, when I am feeling lazy

I have never been a huge fan of beets, but may try them this way just to see if my tastes have changed any over the years.
