Milestone moments?

Prompted by another post I read earlier here on myLot (thanks @JolietJake), I noticed my counter hit all the 8s a while ago, check out the picture above. Well, ok, 4 of'em at any rate. Is it a moment of significance, a milestone?
This got me thinking about moments in books I've read, in films I've watched, where a milestone made an appearance, an aid to the narrative...
Not many authors specifically mention them - yet when the story transitions from the printed page to the silver screen, lo the lowly milestone appears:
Terry Pratchett's The Colour of Magic, or The Light Fantastic; Neil Gaiman's Stardust; Douglas Adams' The Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy; any of the TV or film episodes of M*A*S*H...

@Drosophila Got it - one of the first scenes in the film adaptation of Going Postal makes reference to the Patrician's ongoing Thud game, played by Klacks. I think I shall unearth my copy of Thud!, the book... it merits a re-read.

You just made me realized that I just stopped counting my post count. I use to have a plan to celebrate my 10000th posts but I already surpassed it.
