I'm Scared All Over Again!

I had left a message with the previous owners of our house, thanking them for leaving a double sided page of info for us. They were out when I called, but called me back a little while ago. I asked her about all of my concerns and one of them was her take on bears in the area. She said ... "Yes, we have seen them on the property" but she didn't seemed very concerned. They were even on the property when the kids were outside. And she was not concerned??? I have been reading up on them and what to do and not to do and I'm terrified. All she said is to make lots of noise. I guess the best thing to do when I'm in the garden is to put the radio on REALLY LOUD!! But I have to admit, this city girl is almost ready to put the house back on the market! I don't know if I could stand there calmly and talk to the bear to show him that I'm no threat! My heart is still pounding from the phone call... two hours ago!!

I understand that you are concerned because of your children, but I know that the bears are also afraid by humans. I think that you are safe there, try to calm down, you need a little time to learn to live far from the city.

I know it must be very stressful but I hope you'll try to work out some strategies for coping with bears. I wouldn't like it either but I'd also hate having to drive in city traffic now and my heart would be thumping. So everyone is a bit different about what scares them witless. I hope you are able to move on and enjoy your new home. There are some reassuring comments here too about bears not being too keen on humans either. :)

I am thankful we do not have bears where I live. I am fearful of them. as I know they are bigger and stronger and faster than me.

I have encountered bears in my yard many times. Usually they are just as afraid of me as I am of them. These are Black bears that I have around here. They do not have the reputation for being aggressive. I don't know what kind of bears you have up there.

I am scared of bears too. We lived in Northern Alberta and they were on our property sometimes. They were always in the surrounding bush. They never bothered us though. I did try to always make noise, like get the dog barking or something. We didn't feed the dog outside or keep any garbage outside.
