Do You Know How To Sail a Sailboat?

I have to admit that I know very little about sailing. I’ve done a lot of riding in a ski boat, but I’ve never been sailing.
I have watched the America’s Cup race a couple of times on TV and marveled at the skill that is involved in maneuvering the sailboat, especially when it has to move against the wind. It’s incredible what the sailors are able to accomplish.
Have you ever been sailing? Do you know a LOT about sailing?
It’s just one more thing that I wished I had done when I was younger.

I went sailing once when I was a teenager and it brings back not so pleasant memories. My two friends with me were cottagers. I knew nothing about anything up there but always visited my friend's cottage every summer. The one time the two of them took me sailing they never gave me any direction at all. I don't know whether they colluded ahead of time but they didn't tell me I had to move to the other side of the boat when the mast is swung over. I almost ended out in the water and they just laughed. I have so many bad memories of those two girls and they probably don't even have a clue.

OH, Now that was mean of them to not tell you what to do. I'm surprised you still call them friends.

@IreneVincent I haven't seen them in 20 years or so. One of them is a friend on Facebook but she is rarely on there. This was one of those friendships that became a threesome with me being the third wheel, of which I had so many during my high school years.

@patgalca Sometimes high school "friends" can be that way. I'm sure that you have put that all behind you. Sorry, I made you think about it again.

Wow! Sailed around the world in a boat they made themselves? That is really something. It looks very complicated to me too.

@IreneVincent It took them quite a few years to build. They did all sorts of courses on welding, woodwork, navigation, etc before they got it finished. The husband is a diesel engineer so at least he knew something about engines.

@JudyEv That is quite an interesting story. Amazing that someone would actually take all that time to learn how to build a boat and then sail it around the world. Did someone ever write a book about them? Or a magazine article?

This is a very toughest job. One should have the sense of wind direction and should have enough muscle power.

Yes, it takes a lot of skill and strength to sail. I wouldn't be able to do it at all., but I wouldn't mind RIDING in a sail boat with someone else doing all the work

I don't think I have either. I have been on a catamaran. Sailing looks like it would be fun, but also a bit dangerous.
