To bribe or to ground.

Ever since I accepted to take care of my 15 year old grandson, I have been watching a lot more all those parenting TV shows. It has been maybe 3 decades or more since I had anything to do with parenting and the world has changed a lot since them. And although I´m still the mother of my daughters, our relation has changed a lot as they are independent. Today there was a show in which people told their reasons to either bribe their children to get things done or, if they did not do what they should, to ground them. I confess I had never thought about this. When my children were small, respect for parents and teachers was the only possible thing to do. Then, noone considered abusive an occational spanking and children had to earn their rights. I confess that I´m a little bit scared to be in charge of a 15 year old for 3 weeks. Should I bribe him to get some things done? I don´t think I have the capacity to ground him Now I guess I can bribe him in a subtle granny way. Like "we can make cookies" or "let´s make churros if you are back from school early". What do you think? How do you do it?

@marguicha would you give diego money, or would you rather buy something for him?

@hereandthere I prefer to give him my time, but I don´t know what he wants now. He used to love to cook with me. He still likes to cook.

I think your 'subtle granny' way is probably the way to go. Things have certainly changed a lot and some kids don't have a lot of respect nowadays. I wouldn't try an 'occasional spanking' no matter what he does! (Just joking)

I wouldn´t be able to spank him anyway He´s taller than myself.

I think I would expect respect. Make the boundaries clear. Bribing sounds wrong to me.

Fortunatly, parenting is like giving birth. After some time, you forget the pains and you remember the good times.
