And We Have Liftoff!

Today was a beautiful summer day here in Florida, not at all too hot or too humid like it has been most of the summer. So, I took advantage of such a nice day to take my son out to the park to launch his model rocket! Even though we have launched his rocket hundreds of times, he never seems to get tired of seeing it blast its way skyward! Of course, we had to go to the hobby shop first to buy some new rocket engines, and also a new parachute to bring the rocket safely back to earth, but then we were on our way to the park to have a blast! The current model rocket my son has will launch about a thousand feet (305 meters) into the sky! We have been trying to find a video camera to attach to the rocket that is small enough and light enough to allow the rocket to still reach its maximum velocity, but to date we have not had any luck finding such a camera (at least one that doesn't cost a fortune to buy). But we still had lots of fun launching the rocket over and over again! After the second or third launch, we even had a bunch of spectators gathering around in the park to watch us launch! Have you ever launched a model rocket, or flew RC planes or anything similar?

Nope. But it sounds like fun for him to do.

@KristenH You know this means I'm going to have to buy a bigger rocket, right? lol

I never had the opportunity as a kid to launch model rockets, so I am having just as much fun doing it now as my son is! It's a great father/son activity!

One of my boys had one that we launched for years until it finally broke when it came down and he did not want another one.

I think my son is secretly hoping the one he has now will break so that he can go to the hobby store and get an even bigger and more powerful one!

Sounds like something my husband would love! Maybe I'll buy him a rocket launcher for Father's Day which is a week away for us.

@JudyEv My son has already wrecked three RC helicopters by flying them inside! He has a habit of crashing them into the walls and ceilings of the house!

I think he would have lots of fun launching the rocket! And they're not that expensive, because you can keep re-launching the same rocket over and over! You'll just have to keep replacing the rocket engines each time you launch!

@moffittjc Sounds fun. He has wrecked his radio controlled helicopter by trying to fly it outside when it specifically says for inside use only.

Sounds fun. At first I thought you were going to talk about a commercial launch, as Florida is where the Cape Canaveral NASA launch site is, is it not?

Yes, Cape Canaveral is where NASA and the Air Force launch all their rockets! I have seen quite a few "real" rocket launches in my life, the most recent one back on 19 August. It never gets old watching those powerful rockets blast off into space!

No, that sounds interesting and fun ...and for me the most important...family bonding. My husband took out our boys for flying kites.

I'm going to try kites next with my kids, although it may not be as fun for my son after he has enjoyed the experience of launching model rockets!
