Does your work help you with MyLot?

For nearly 20 years I was a ghostwriter of daily jokes and humorous observations for radio DJs in the UK. Eventually the service fizzled out due to changes in the radio industry here but just recently I have decided to restart it. Part of what I had to write were Phoners and Texters. These were where the broadcaster said something funny about a topic and then invited their listeners to get in touch with their own opinions and experiences. Obviously that was good preparation for posting here! Dealing with questions, giving advice, collecting opinions, writing professionally... Does your job have parallels with MyLot?

No, I gotta say what I do at myLot has nothing to do with what I did in my working life, unless you can count typing.

I agree that's not much of a parallel!

@msiduri Plus you can write as much as you like in a post instead of having to try and fit all that information on a small label on a bottle (my late grandfather was a pharmacist).

Oh, I did a whole lot of typing when I worked in the pharmacy. This is nice in that I don't have to stop to answer the phone or listen to a boss bi—voice complaints.

Any job I ever had had nothing in common with MyLot. To me MyLot is an outlet for me to express myself freely. And to test the waters with writing.

@asfarasiknow Maybe. But look, many people have jobs that do not concur with writing. So coming to sites like this is something they like and enjoy doing. So to them, yes, it could be an escape.

@inertia4 Of course. But I'm interested to find out about the ones where there is some connection - or am I the only one?

Perhaps I should have added something about pure escapism!

Indeed they are good preparations for mylotting! My previous job is in the office and has practically nothing to do with mylot.

@asfarasiknow , they are very hard to do professionally with so many volunteer broadcasters around

@arthurchappell Yes, so many licences granted - but so many local, community, hospital, student or internet stations using minimum wage or unpaid broadcasters. Not to mention all the mergers, networking and voice-tracking on the big stations reducing the number of properly-paid hours available.

I hope you find something soon but something that's satisfying. Like you, I have a background in radio and live performance and it's sometimes hard to fit these around other employment (or vice versa!)

I worked in retail most of my adult life, as a pharmacy technician for the last ten years of it. Not much overlap, I'm afraid.

I am a substitue teacher and a mystery shopper. Both require some writing, but completely different from myLot

I use to have a business selling tropical fish and pond plants. This was years ago when I was a new member of Mylot and other members helped me design my business cards, which really helped me sell a lot of pond plants. I had a beautiful waterlily on my card and people would come to my business just to see that waterlily. So many people put in ponds my first year and I enjoyed seeing the photographs of their new ponds. I am now almost retired work part time, so can do some traveling to see many impressive ponds.

So with you it was the other way around: MyLot helped with your business!

I am retired. However, I am interested in people and promoting a more positive view and way of life and in that there is a parallel between what I do when I meet people and what I post on MyLot.

@asfarasiknow Yes, if one looks on MyLot, one can always find something to think about and discuss, whatever one has on their mind, with someone else in this big wide world.

Well, I would say that my job has parallels with myLot, because my husband is a Consultant and I work with him. We collect opinions, we give advice and I write professional reports.

I didn't realise that DJs had their stuff written for them. And do you mean that the phoners and texters weren't real people, just someone like you hired to pretend? I'm retired now, apart from a little part time job, but my job had no parallels with MyLot.

The very best DJs often don't need writers, or just use us for additional/reserve material. The questions for the Phoners and Texters were scripted and we might come up with an imaginary answer to get the ball rolling but everything after that came from listeners (or was supposed to!)

I am humor-challenged, like Marlin from Finding Nemo. But my work helps me come up with things to write about, like gardening, early childhood education, etc.

No-one who uses a phrase like 'humor-challenged' can be humor-challenged!

I would say it does, pretty frequently. I am a teacher, so maybe my informational posts arise out of my desire to teach and help others.

I had a job in which I had to do all of those other than write professionally. I did have to write reports, though.

In a way responding here is a bit like replying to a steady stream of short emails - only without any work pressure.

That would have been an interesting job. I'm retired but I don't think there are any parallels with my present life and MyLot.
