Discussion Monger!

Are you a discussion monger? Do you deal in discussions? @BernieZ recently wrote about hatemongering with our current election (it's super bad this time around, I know more about what they are making up about their opponents than what they will stand for themselves). I got to thinking about the word Monger/mongering. When I hear it my mind immediately wants to add the word hate to it. Turns out while it IS a word used mostly "in combination" with something else, it doesn't necessarily have to come along with the word hate! According to freedictionary.com mongering can mean one of two things. Either a dealer in a specific commodity, or a person who promotes something undesirable/discreditable. It usually used in combination with something, hatemonger, ironmonger etc. That makes us discussion/like/comment mongers!

@JamesHxstatic Tremendous catch from the fishmonger! I reckon he was very proud of his catch that he loves to discuss about.

@JamesHxstatic Haggling for a bargain on Atlantic tuna, I reckon, is a good rule of thumb.

As an outsider, I get the impression with current US politics that saying anything nice about your opponent will offend too many of your own supporters. Which is not good (I also largely don't believe anything said by a Republican about Clinton or a Democrat about Trump, without independent, usually foreign, confirmation).

@Jessicalynnt Although I probably would be more tolerant of Bill Clinton's opinion of Bush Jr. and vice versa, given that they seem to be friends, but that probably distorts the facts in another way.

Think I know what you are saying here if I hear correctly what is said might be not have anything to do with hate but everything to do with disrespect? I just wonder if ever person takes it the same way.

depends on how you take it, it can simply mean a dealer, because there was nothing negative about an ironmonger back when that was what they were called rather than a blacksmith or something

I associate the word Monger to a dealer, or a trader in commodities. At least this is the British meaning of the term I suppose.

exactly, and I am sure that came first, and someone borrowed it, added the word hate, and then that version, at least over here took off

more research says yes, it is JUST a dealer of something, we then add a word in front of it to denotate what the dealer is dealing in.
