She Watched The Trap

monitor lizard trap

My photo above shows my cat looking at a trap set by some men in a nearby construction site. I hate them for putting that nylon rope tied to a madre cacao branch (Gliricidia sepium) and with loop at the opening of a plastic pipe to catch the monitor lizard. They wanted to catch and eat it! I just prayed they won't catch it because it is already an endangered species, and has an important role in the environment. While walking near it, my cat followed and watched it intently; so I got a big mahogany fruit and threw it on the trap, to make it appear that the trap was "sabotaged" by the fallen mahogany fruit. I was afraid too that my cat might get caught in it and die if the nylon loop caught him.

Those traps ought to be illegal. My dog got caught in one that was set to catch rabbits, but fortunately she was a big dog and it was only her leg that was trapped. I managed to free her and all she lost was a bit of hair. Your cat could easily get caught in that trap.

That's why I disengaged it. It might caught the cats and I don't want them to catch the monitor lizard too.

Yes, they say it tastes like chicken, but it is helpful because it eats some pests like rats.

@Hatley yes, I always watch for it while it is surveying the area for food. I just wanted it there because it is harmless and it avoids people.

@acelawrites actually I think it's an Iguana, yes it's quite endangered now but up to the 70s their were still a lot, in my mom's province, it was hunted down because it preys on poultry, it tastes better than chicken. It should now be conserved and i think that snare is illegal

Yes, it is a big bayawak (monitor lizard) that I have been seeing here, but I am not afraid of it unlike the snakes! It looks pregnant and I don't want them to catch it.

Are they trying to trap a gecko ? That's an endangered specie . They could be penalized for catching them if caught by the authority .

No, it's not a gecko (tuko), but a monitor lizard (bayawak), also an endangered species.

If monitor lizards are an endangered species, then it should be against the law to capture and eat one. I would report them to the police.

@acelawrites That's good that they are finished and left. I don't know why someone would want to eat one of those anyway.

It should be. But it needs a lot of time and effort to do it; anyway I disengaged the trap and the men were no longer here in or place anymore because they finished constructing a house here.

@simone10 they did not know it's importance in the environment; they want such exotic foods!

Your world is so different than mine and yet your concerns are similar to mine. I would be concerned like you. Your kitty is cute.

Monitor lizard is seen here also. It is famous for their grasping power while climbing on trees or wall. It is a endangered one. It is a punishable act here.

It is also punishable in our country to capture or kill endangered animals; but law enforcers are lacking, so common people should help the government in enforcing it.

I probably would have done the same. Lizard might be tasty, but it's not good to see a cat hurt.

I was "protesting" inside when I saw them putting the trap, but I avoided reprimanding them because they might think something bad towards us.
