Trying to get eaten by turkey vultures

Today's kid client and I have a running joke. When we hike, and there are turkey vultures circling over us, we play dead to see if they'll come down and eat us. Of course, we always fail, but we then laugh and consider how turkey vultures know that we're not really dead. I suggested that maybe they can see when an animal is about to die, because they move slowly an unevenly, but I admit to him that it's just a hypothesis. It's hard for me to believe that this kid sometimes attacks his teachers in school, hitting and biting them. He's sweet and curious, like most 8-year-old boys. I think that there should be more programs for ADHD boys that involve getting out in nature. Among the things that this boy knows, just from our discussions on hikes: Turkey vultures are "scavengers" and only eat things that are already dead; hawks like to eat bunnies and other small rodents; you can eat miner's lettuce but must avoid poison oak; boilers near mines could blow up in the late 1800s, killing miners; a lot of babies died in the late 1800s from diseases we could cure today; you can catch a juvenile Western Fence Lizard just by putting your hand in front of him and tapping behind him; sheep and goats can be used for wildfire abatement; some rock cliffs look harder to climb than they really are; animals who eat meat have stinkier poop than herbivores; if there's a word on a sign that you can't read, just slow down and sound it out. Taking these kids out hiking satisfies my secret desire to be Tom Sawyer, but I manage to sneak in enough edumacation to justify my wanton self-satisfaction.

great fun to try to get eaten by scavengers - sadly we don't have that many of them here

@TheHorse How often do are you able to take them hiking?

That particular job ended in January, but I was able to take each kid hiking about twice a month.

@Hannihar I'm thinking of bending the rules and giving one of them a call. But overall, no. With the kids from the mother-and-child rehab, I'm in touch with a handful.

So, you and he were hoping to be buzzard bait? What would his parents say if a buzzard took a bite out of him, pony?

Good questions. I opened up the discussion with him on our outing yesterday and will see what happens. I wish he'd treat his teachers like he treats me. But sitting quietly at a desk is not easy for true ADHD kids.

@TheHorse sounds like he needs something different at school. A place to stand and wiggle, or something to fidget with not sure

@Jessicalynnt Maybe more 1-on-1 attention? I never learned.

ADHD children must get really frustrated sometimes in a relatively confined situation. It's never struck me before but is ADHD restricted to boys? Surely not.

@JudyEv Is his IQ close to normal? Some autistic kids have a particular talent that's notable. I haven't worked with that many autistic kids, but I always try to expose them to music, just in case it "takes."

ADHD is not restricted to boys, but it's more common in boys. So are disorders on the Autism spectrum.

@TheHorse I have a great/grand (?) nephew who is borderline autistic. He is a very talented trumpet player despite being only around 12 years old.

They should have more programs for those kids. Give them something positive on which to focus.

I know there are a few out there. But they require a lot of person-hours.

I've met very few that don't. You just have to nurture it.
