My First Car

# 39 My first discussion in October and I just feel like starting out the month with a light discussion... At this stage, I have sons who got, are getting, and will be looking for their first cars. Somehow all of that just took me back to the time when I got my first car... I was young and stupid but quite lucky when my parents helped me out with payments for a brand new car to be considered as my first car. I picked the car up from the dealer with my roommate and drove it proudly back to our apartment. I did not even have a sensible reason why I chose a Ford Mustang. All I knew it was a popular model at the time and my first real boyfriend drove one. I had even broken up with the boyfriend years before that and I wanted the car to remind me of him; how stupid was that, huh?! Image credit: Pixabay

Oh wow - that must be pretty exciting for the boys! Since I stayed at home for college (and I paid for college myself, but in those days we could), my parents got me a car on July 4th (because the deals were there that day) after I graduated high school. I didn't really have a say in what I wanted - I didn't really know or care anyway . . . but it was a hatchback Nissan Sentra which was fine with me.

@sishy7 I never had any problems with that Nissan . . . in fact my second car (the first car I bought on my own) was a Nissan too . . . a Nissan 240SX. I actually wanted a Corvette, but of course it was double the price and insurance was sky high. The 240SX kinda looked like a Corvette . Yah, I remember Datsun too!

Oh, Nissan is a very good brand... Very reputable and reliable then and now... My husband (then boyfriend) had an old Datsun 210 (Nissan was Datsun before) and he loved the car so much as it never gave him any problems...

I gave up trying to learn how to drive because i am a nervous person when i am already at the road driving . Thus , i never get to own a car even when i am already working and can afford to buy even the second hand one . Now , i let my husband do the driving of our car .

Sometimes traffic conditions could also discourage one from learning how to drive...

@SIMPLYD I am as nervous as you are and didn't learn to drive. I love reading when I am travelling especially if inside a car. I find it wonderful to have a chauffeur

Mustangs are cute cars. Good choice! My roommate got a red one as a gift. Good luck to your sons. We gave them ours and bought newer ones for ourselves.

We have only stick shifts and my sons do not drive manual transmission... We bought a second-hand automatic sedan for them to learn in...

Something like that... Driving a brand new car somehow put me on the 'cool' list - and being that it was a mustang, my friends thought I was the coolest...

Hum...well, why not sell your Ford Mustang? Then, use the money for buying a brand new car. It is one good way I think for you not to remember your ex-boyfriend anymore.

@sishy7 Wow! That was the year I was born. It was such a long time. Perhaps, cars those times were not expensive compared to the prices of cars now.

That is really not a good reason to pick a car, but honestly, I have heard worse reasons for buying something... at least the Mustang was a good car for gas mileage, the body is built tight with little or no rattles and they are made to run virtually forever as long as you take good care of them. (Believe me, you could have done much worse!) You know I sell computers as well as cell phones... I was helping a lady pick out her first computer that she bought, herself... I kept asking her all the questions I am supposed to ask to help guide the person to the pc that would be just right for her... She dutifully answered every question I ask, but didn't budge one inch away from the shiny red Dell that was the worst computer she could have chosen.... I kept trying to show her the light gray laptop that had all the features she was asking for, the memory she needed and the speed to play the games she loved... She kept stroking the finish on the red Dell... I pointed out that it only had 2 GB RAM, only had 160 GB built in memory, did not have a fast enough video card for World of Warcraft.... She insisted the red Dell was perfect for her needs... I sold her the red Dell... I did remind her that she had 15 days to return it and buy the one she would be happier with, but I swear she wasn't listening to me... SMH!

She fell in love with the red Dell... Nothing you could say would sway her away from her love... She's as hopeless as I was when I bought that Mustang...

Toyota Innova? It's a great car... But now at least you don't have to deal with the stress of driving by commuting in tricycles...

@sishy7 Yes, definitely. Driving a car will stress me out with the traffic and meeting people who do not think about others. I mean the reckless drivers on the road.

Traffic conditions can really discourage one from driving sometimes... I know a few people who prefer not to drive... In fact, 2 of my sons seem to prefer taking public transportation or being driven around rather than driving their own cars like many at their age could not wait for...
