Selling Spaghetti

I know some people who could sell a hair brush to a bald man, but not me. I have never been a sales person, and I never will. My fifth grader is going on an over night field trip, and the cost is $285.00 per child. The school has set up a spaghetti dinner fund raiser to help cover the cost. Hmm...I can't sell a spaghetti dinner! I couldn't sell sight to a blind person! Well, at least they will let us pay it in installments.....I hate fundraisers.

Hahaha, that seems easier than most of the things that children try to sell nowadays. My daughters school has a field trip for 7th and 8th graders to go to Washington DC over spring break. The cost of that trip is $1785, that's before spending money. They have an installment plan also and if you signed up for it in May last yr I believe the cost was around $225 a month. While it sounded like a great opportunity that is just more than most families can afford, also all the money comes out of our pocket no fundraisers to offset costs. They alternate between going to DC and NYC, I told our daughter we would see about NYC since that wouldn't be until the Spring of 2018, but it's still a lot of money. Her Choir class also is making a trip to Denver at the end of the school yr to do a performance and then go to some amusement park we haven't been told how much that one will cost as of yet. I'm sure that will come out of our pocket also with no fundraisers to offset the cost. We will just have to wait and see on that one.

@cindiowens for the DC and NYC trip out of the 7th and 8th grades less than 50 students attend, with most years averaging 20 to 30 students. We went to the meeting that they held at the end of 6th grade and the 2 teachers that attend this each year tried to say that the payment plan was affordable to all. While I could probably do the payment plan, struggling to do so, I can't fathom how they could say that it was affordable to all. The area in which I live has a high poverty level. We have 2 food trucks now that run in the summer just so kids don't go hungry during the summer. This to me seems like it should be more of a high school field trip since we live so far away.

beaniefanatic13, This is way too much money. When our oldest son was in high school, the school wanted to do a trip to Germany (in the middle of winter) and the cost was way too much, so we did not sign up for it. Our son wasn't very upset.

Wow! I don't have it so bad after all. I can't see how they can do these things when all students will not be able to participate...

Don't you just have to talk people into paying for a pasta dinner - that can't be too difficult. 285 filed trip - that sounds like a lot of money to begin with. If I had to I could sell it.

although you hate fundraisers they are an excellent way to raise funds if you need the funds. If you really don't need the funds why bother. But fudge, chocolate chip cookies are good sellers. Everyone loves goodies. You put two in a ziploc bag and sell em for 75 cents a piece

The trip is actually going to be great. They're going to Charleston SC and I think it is a great learning experience, but they are taking a tour bus, and spending the night at a very nice motel, Eating at Golden Corrall, etc...

That's a lot of money for an over night trip. Where are they going and are they staying in a 5 star hotel?

My grandkids school has spaghetti fundraisers and they are very successful, people love to eat out and spaghetti is popular. You probably wouldn't have to do much selling, just mentioning to friends and family that there is a dinner.

I'm not keen on fund-raising either. Luckily I don't have to do it too often nowadays.

How can an overnight trip for a kid be so expensive?

I always used to hate those fund raisers when my kids were in school. I'd rather just pay a certain amount and we'd all be better off. But $285 does seem like an awful lot. When we had fundraisers at church, we would make the food, then turn around and buy a ticket! It would sure have been easier and cheaper just to donate a certain sum.

Fund raisers are more in numbers. It is difficult to recognize the good or bad purpose.

I used to hate those fund raisers, we sold newspaper subscriptions, magazine subscriptions, christmas wrapping paper, all kinds of things people didn't want to buy.
