Ever find a drunk passed out in your back yard?

I didn't either, but my daughter did, not once but two days in a row. It was apparently the
habit of this guy, Edward, to go behind this house while it was vacant and for sale with a bottle of vodka and drink himself into unconsciousness. We had found a vodka bottle in back before she moved in.
She called me Friday afternoon to say that as she got home from work and let her Chihuahua puppy out, she saw the drunk's legs. She scooped up the pup and went back in the house to call the police. Due to emergency calls, they did not arrive for an hour, as he lay there not moving with her not knowing if he was even alive. The officer finally arrived and did not really even take a report, or ID the guy, just made sure he left and supposedly got on a bus.
Saturday afternoon, she had been out for a while with a male friend. When they arrived back at her place, "Edward" was snoozing in back. It took a while, but this same officer arrived, along with some social worker van and took Edward away for the night to dry out.
So, the cop seems to know this drunk and says he is "not likely" to break in. If my daughter demands that he be arrested, will he come back and vandalize her place or worse?
It is a hundred mile drive but I may have to go hang out and be a "welcoming" committee for Edward if this keeps up. The authorities seem to treat this far more lightly than I would.

Geez. Scary, even if he's harmless.

Edward needs to find him a new spot to get drunk in. Poor old goof. I had a drunk come walking in my house one night. I was up late and had the door open because it was hot out. He left when I ordered him to so no problem but it sure scared me. My young daughter was asleep in the next room.

Oh my gosh - I would be frighten and they won't do anything about it. That's unfair because he's on private property and why that home?

He finds it "peaceful" apparently. He supposedly has a place to live near the airport.

@JamesHxstatic Why not pick another area! Does your daughter live alone with her dog?
I wonder if she can speak to upper management at the police station or something. How do they feel if they came home to someone drunk, not knowing if they're alive and on your property for two days already.
Who knows if they will harm me! I wonder if he had a friend that lives there or something?

@infatuatedbby She does live alone. He just seems to like the place since it is "peaceful."

The cop told my daughter that the man lives near the airport. I would be prepared for whatever happened, but I am not sure that is the step to take.

We deal with homeless people sleeping in our parks all the time. You have to make life uncomfortable for them (without harassing them or treating them inhumanely) in order for them to move on and find someplace else to drink and/or pass out. Sometimes, it's as simple as talking to them and asking them to move someplace else, and sometimes you have to resort to other methods.
I've never found a drunk passed out in my yard before, but I have woken up passed out in my yard before! (back in my young party days of college!)

@JamesHxstatic Maybe she should let the dog loose on the guy, and see if it scares him off! Does she have a big dog or little dog? And is it vicious, or harmless?

I am hoping that the Portland police will have a less tepid response with this guy if it happens again. My daughter is afraid to take her dog out at night now.

@moffittjc Hmmm...a very small Chihuahua puppy, just over two pounds. Not such a good watch dog, but you gave me the idea of her downloading the sound of a vicious pit bull and playing it when she comes home.

This is not right and the police should be putting an end to it. This should not by any means be taken lightly. The police are suppose to be there to protect the citizens and clearly in this case they aren't doing that.

You need to put an end to Edward's not so good a habit. So what is the welcome commitee's plan?

@JamesHxstatic perhaps just talk to him first, preferably when he's sober, i hope the presence of a man in the house would be enough to turn him off and find another place to crash.

That is ridiculous @JamesXstatic . I think a butt-load of buck shot would be the cure. What's your daughter suppose to do? Serve Edward breakfast too?????

Is Edward his real name? Or you just decided to name him like that? You could quite well call him the creepy guy. Anyway, even if he does not appear again your daughter won't have her peace of mind until she can be sure the guy won't be in the backyard anymore. make sure she gets an alarm with motion sensor. When someone enters the backyard, it should turn a light on or maybe sound an alarm.

She is looking into that, but he comes in broad daylight. So far she has not been home when he arrives.

that seems quite bad. he is a habitual drinker whom turns up at your daughter's place when drunk, probably out of habit too..
It is good that you go hang out with your daughter and be "welcoming" committee though the 'welcome' came in inverted commas...

@JamesHxstatic yes. that's what we mean here too. when a word is quoted with inverted commas, it means the opposite...

That would be very annoying if that happens on a regular basis.. I also come across a man who appeared drunk and passed out on the side of the street a block away from us.. He was lying there but I called the police and they came in less than ten minutes .. they called an ambulance too to take him to the hospital..

I think you might be wise to hang out at your daughter's house to make sure this guy finds another place to drink. It would make me very uncomfortable if it was one of our daughters. Years ago, my brother-in-law and his wife went out for the day but forgot to lock their house along the Russian River in Northern California. When they got home, there was a guy sleeping in their bed! Creepy!!

They need to take it FAR more seriously. Even if he is " not likely" to break in, there are laws against trespassing, which he is doing on a regular basis! You don't want to get YOURSELF arrested by "welcoming" Edward, but I should think you can certainly make a call to the local precinct, as a concerned parent, perhaps a strongly-worded one, if necessary.
